‘Jackets Sit 0.5 Point out after Day 1 of the LL Championships

HENRIETTA, NY – Two Yellowjackets won Liberty League Championships in their respective events, 14 set new personal bests and 14 tallied regional qualifying times, as the University of Rochester men's track & field sits half a point shy of first-place RPI following day one of the Liberty League Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at RIT's Gordon Field House.
 
Scott Sikorski and Mitch Lienert led UR with a pair of Liberty League titles, Sikorski winning the mile and Lienert the 400 meters.
 
Sikorski clocked in with a meet and facility record of 4:10.67 in the mile to finish first, while Alec Glazier finished seventh with a new, personal best 4:19.17 time to also tally points for UR, with both being regional qualifying times.
 
In the 400 meters, Lienert led a swarm of Yellowjackets as UR had the top three finishers in the event. Lienert came in first at 49.60, a new pr, while Gabe Lundy (50.21, 2nd) and P.J. London (50.70, 2nd) rounded out the top three, again all with regional qualifying tallies.
 
In the distance medley, UR's team of Griffin Weiner, Cole Hascup, Skye Crocker and Max Hughes came in with a time of 10:29.65, good for second and another regional qualifier.
 
Over in the field events, another swarm of 'Jackets finished on the shot put podium, with UR taking the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th-place spots. James O'Neill led the four Rochester finishers with his personal best 14.54m throw, while Jordan Johnson came in 5th with a throw of 13.98m, both regional qualifiers. In 6th, Noah Ragland scored a personal best 13.82m throw, while Dylan Rykert finished just behind him in seventh at 13.03m.
 
In the pole vault, James Schmidt was UR's best finisher, coming in tied for 7th at 4.16m, a new personal best.
 
UR again took three podium spots in the long jump, with Frederick Liu (6.91), Kyle Lane (6.77) and Manny Eribo (6.66) finishing second, third and fourth, respectively, all with personal-best and regional qualifying jumps.
 
In Friday's first-round events, Peter Brodnik qualified for the 60m hurdle finals with his 8.53 time, good for 3rd in the qualifiers and a regional qualifying time as well. While in the first round of the 60 meters, Leinert and Londo both qualified, clocking in at 6.99 and 7.04, respectively.
 
Just over halfway through the heptathlon, Aeden Angelone sits in first place with 2,693 points, Gabe Thyne in third with 2,298 points, Cole Siewert in fourth with 2,292 points, and Lucas Thiele in sixth with 2,191.
 
Angelone scored second-place finishes across the board in the 60m, long jump, high jump and shot put, setting new personal bests in the 60 meters (7.36) and long jump (6.64m), while Siewert took home first in the high jump with a pr of 1.82m.
 
Siewert and Thyne also set new, personal bests in the 60m, 7.40 (5th) and 7.79 (9th), while Thiele added another pr in the shot put with a throw of 7.77m.
 
Following the first day's action, RPI sits in first place in the men's standings with 80 points, with Rochester right behind them with 79.5 points. Ithaca rounds out the top three with a score of 51.
 
The final day of the 2022-23 Liberty League Indoor Track & Field Championships will get started at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25 with the Men's Heptathlon 60m Hurdles, as Rochester looks to surge past RPI and win their second-straight Liberty League crown.
