BROCKPORT, NY – With 17 Top-5 finishes across nearly every event, the University of Rochester men's track & field team finished third out of a field of 19, wrapping up the SUNY Brockport Multi & Invitational on Saturday at the Special Events Recreation Center.
After
Lucas Thiele led the way for UR with a fifth-place finish in the heptathlon, scoring 3,940 points,
Gabe Lundy got things going for the Yellowjackets on Day 2, placing just outside the Top 5 with his sixth-place finish in the 60-meter dash, clocking in at 7.22.
P.J. London and Lundy then finished 1-2 in the 200 meters, both scoring regional qualifying times with London's first-place, 22.75 finish, and Lundy's 22.90, good for second.
Luke Lyons kept things rolling into the 400 meters, scoring a fourth-place finish and regional qualifying time of 50.20, while
Brendan McCollum joined Lyons in the Top 10 at 9th (51.31).
In the 600 meters,
Daniel Ford added to UR's Top-5 tally, running a 1:23.82, with
Christian Voloshen just behind him in sixth at 1:25.03.
Skye Crocker earned another Top-5 time with a 1:58.87 time in the 800 meters, good for fifth, while
Nick Gaitanis and
Griffin Weiner both scored Top-5 finishes in the mile.
Gaitanis clocked in at 4:28.78, good for third, while Weiner ran a 4:29.37, finishing fifth.
Peter Brodnik scored regional-qualifying times in both the preliminaries and finals of the 60-meter hurdles, improving upon his 8.70 preliminary run to finish second in the finals with a time of 8.59.
Then UR's 4x400 relay team of
Colin Hascup, London, Voloshen and
Sam Kellner turned in a fifth-place time of 3:35.81, with the "B" team of
Konstantin Dits,
Jonathan Sullo,
Nolan Goldthwaite and Weiner right behind them at 3:38.93.
Aadit Jain led UR in the high jump, tying for fifth with a 1.81m jump, while
Cody Reeth finished fourth in the pole vault with a jump of 4.25m.
Continuing in the field events,
Cole Goodman continued his impressive run, scoring a second-place finish with a 7.04m jump, another regional qualifying score.
Sam Lorenzetti scored Rochester's best finish in the triple jump at 13.17m, good for fourth, while
James O'Neill led UR in the shot put with a 14.10m throw, a regional qualifying throw and a fourth-place finish.
Two 'Jackets, O'Neill and
Jordan Johnson (8th, 12.99m), finished in the Top 8 of the shot put before four Yellowjackets scored Top-8 finishes in the weight throw.
Johnson turned in another impressive performance, leading the way with a 15.38m throw, good for fourth, O'Neill finished fifth with a 15.10m throw,
Nolan Ragland sixth with a 14.98m throw, and
Joe Bumpus rounded out UR's Top 4 in eighth with a throw of 14.40m.
The Yellowjackets finished the day with 108 points, just four points shy of the leader, SUNY Genseo, who took home the Multi & Invitational Team title. Brockport rounded out the Top 3 at 110 points, while RIT came up right behind Rochester at 106 points.
Next up for the 'Jackets is a split-squad weekend, with Rochester competing at both the RIT Friday Night Invite in Henrietta, NY and the Fasttrack National Invite in Staten Island, NY on Friday, Feb. 10 beginning at 1 p.m.
