Nine outstanding scholar-athletes from the University of Rochester have been chosen as Provost's Circle Scholars during the 2022-23 academic year.

This year's induction ceremony will take place on Monday, April 24 at the Patrick Barry House, with the official presentation being conducted by University Provost David Figlio.

Every year, the Department of Athletics & Recreation submits names of individuals to be honored for this award. The honorees have the highest cumulative grade point averages among the junior class who are currently competing with one of the University's 23 intercollegiate athletic programs.

"Congratulations to all the students recently inducted into the Provost's Circle. I am very proud of their accomplishments, and it is my honor to recognize them for their commitment and hard work," said Provost Figlio. "These exemplary scholars and athletes embody the spirit of Meliora, and I have no doubt they will go on to do great things."

The 2023 inductees include five women and four men and represent eight different sports. The nine individuals are also from eight different states around the country, hailing from New York, California, Washington state, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Colorado, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

This year's honorees are Christian Voloshen (Bethlehem, PA, Biomedical Engineering) representing men's cross country/track & field, Charlie Shanks (Litchfield, CT, Finance) from the men's soccer program, Rachel Markowitz (Westfield, NJ, Language, Media & Communications) and Madeleine LaChance (Belchertown, MA, Optical Engineering), with both Markowitz and LaChance representing the women's rowing team.

Other winners include, James Schmidt (Rochester, NY, Molecular Genetics) of the men's track & field team, Carly Fields (Battleground, WA, Anthropology) and Sarah Martin (Cazenovia, NY, Health, Behavior & Society) of the women's soccer program, Sabrina Terando (Folsom, CA, Microbiology/Nursing) from women's track and field and cross country and Cody Yan (Superior, CO, Computer Science) of the men's swimming & diving program.
