NEW YORK, NY – Senior hurdler
Peter Brodnik sprinted his way into the Rochester men's track and field record books to highlight day one of competition at the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Championships at the Armory in New York City on Friday evening.
Brodnik ran a time of 8.45 seconds in the 60 meter hurdle preliminary heats, qualifying for the finals in eighth place. The time edged out the old UR school record of 8.46 seconds which was set back in 1981 by Matt Riordan.
Sophomore
Vishal Yalamanchili captured ninth place, just missing out on scoring for Rochester, during the 5000 meters. Yalamanchili crossed the finish in a new personal-best by over seven second, posting a time of 15:12.67.
Rochester had two competitors in the heptathlon, as
Gabe Thyne and
Cole Siewert both finished day one strong. Thyne is in sixth place after four events, scoring 2,379 points. Siewert sits close behind in eighth at 2,359 points.
Thyne set new personal records in the long jump (6.22 meters), shot put (8.87 meters) and high jump (1.78 meters). Siewert also had PR's in the 60 meters (7.77 seconds) and long jump (6.25 meters) while ending second in the high jump competition at 1.81 meters.
The Yellowjackets had a trio of athletes compete in the long jump.
Frederick Liu placed 15th in 6.42 meters.
Kyle Lane was 17th at 6.38 meters and
Manny Eribo rounded out the group in 20th with a 6.16 meter leap.
Also in the field, senior
James O'Neill placed 22nd in the shot put with a mark of 13.69 meters.
Sprinter
P.J. London was 36th in a large field in the 60 meters, clocking in with a time of 7.21 seconds.
Day two of action begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning.
