NEW YORK – A solid day two of competition, especially in the sprints and multi-events were keys in Rochester's 13th place finish at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Armory.
Rochester scored a total of 15 points, coming from four individuals to rank 13th among 42 teams that scored at least a point at the regional competition.
For the second day in a row, the heptathlon saw Rochester's
Cole Siewert and
Gabe Thyne set several personal records to end fourth and fifth in the competition. The duo ended just one point apart in across the seven-event competition, with Siewert edging out Thyne 4,255 points to 4,254 points.
Siewert's day two saw him finish third in the 1000 meters, fourth in the 60 meter hurdles and fifth in the pole vault. His pole vault height of 3.50 meters was a new personal-best and the overall score was the best of his career.
Thyne had PR's in the overall score, pole vault and 1000 meters. His highlight came as he was first among the heptathlon competitors in the 1000 meters, running a 2:49.33 second time, adding 773 points to his score. He also cleared a personal-best 3.30 meters in the pole vault for a personal record and finished sixth in the field in the 60 meter hurdles.
In the open 60 meter hurdles event, senior
Peter Brodnik capped his indoor season with a sixth place result in a loaded field, ending at 8.49 seconds in the event, just a day after he set a new school record in the event.
Siewert edged out his own teammate by one point for 4th place.
Rochester's fourth individual scorer was
Gabe Lundy in the 400 meters. Lundy finished in sixth place with his time of 49.21 seconds.
Several other Yellowjackets set new personal bests during Saturday's action, with three of those coming in the 3000 meters.
Nick Gaitanis was 12th in 8:39.59,
Alec Glazier placed 13th in 8:41.29 and
Nate Brunacini was 15th in 8:42.97, all setting new indoor PR's.
Sprinter
P.J. London ended 18th in the 200 meters in a personal-best of 22.45 seconds, while two UR runners were top-15 in the 800 meters.
Brendan McCollum placed 10th in 1:56.69 and
Griffin Weiner set a new personal-best in 13th, running a time of 1:56.93.
Brodnik, London, Lundy and
Manny Eribo just missed a podium finish in the 4x200 meter relay, ending ninth with their time of 1:31.46.
Jordan Johnson also was just out of the scoring in the weight throw, placing ninth with a toss of 16.88 meters.
Nolan Ragland finished 13th in 16.01 meters and
James O'Neill was 21st (15.11 meters).
Also in the field,
Aadit Jain ended in 13th place in the high jump competition, clearing a height of 1.90 meters.
Rochester's next meet is the NCAA Division III Championships, taking place in Birmingham, Alabama next Friday and Saturday. Only selected individuals will be competing at NCAA's with those selections being announced in the next couple of days.
