BROCKPORT, NY – Some nice mid-April weather greeted the University of Rochester track and field team to a fantastic competition at the SUNY Brockport Multi and Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets used the favorable conditions to their favor, earning five event wins, 20 top-3 finishes, 15 All-Atlantic Regional performances and five NCAA Division III top-50 marks this season.
Sophomore jumper
Cole Goodman paced Rochester with a remarkable effort in the triple jump, posting an event winning distance of 15.14 meters, the current #1 mark in Division III this season. Goodman, who ended runner-up at indoor nationals in the triple jump, finished just a couple inches shy of the Rochester school record.
Rochester's decathlon contingent had a strong second day of competition on Saturday, with
Aeden Angelone finishing first with 6,401 points,
Alex Opsahl placing second with 6,076 points and
Gabe Thyne ending fourth with 5,547 points. All three hit the standard for the regional meet next month.
Angelone currently ranks #7 on the Division III performance list, Opsahl sits just outside the top-10 in 11th and Thyne cracked the NCAA top-30. Angelone was strong in day two's events, capturing first place among decathletes in the pole vault (4.20m), javelin (43.82m) and 1500 meters (4:50.81). Opsahl finished second in the pole vault (3.90m) and third in the 110 meter hurdles (16.35 seconds). Thyne's top events were the discus (2nd, 30.98m) and 1500 meters (2nd, 4:55.74).
UR's jumper group accounted for six regional qualifying marks and six top-3 results. In addition to Goodman's triple jump win,
Sam Lorenzetti ended third with a jump of 13.56 meters.
During the long jump,
Frederick Liu, Lorenzetti and
Manny Eribo finished 1-2-3. Liu's mark of 6.98 meters ranks #35 across Division III. Lorenzetti jumped 6.85 meters and Eribo finished at 6.82 meters.
First-year
Aadit Jain placed third in the high jump with a 1.91 meter height, qualifying for the regional meet.
Opsahl finished second in the decathlon.
Sprinter
P.J. London added three top-3 results himself, running to a win in the 100 meters, third in the 200 meters and placing second on the 4x100 meter relay. London's time in the 100 meters was 10.95, a new personal-best and regional qualifier. The relay team was made up of Jain,
Gabe Lundy, London and Eribo and finished with a 42.46 second time, also a regional qualifying time.
The Yellowjackets added another 1-2-3 finish in the 800 meters.
Daniel Ford led the group with the win in an AAR time of 1:55.76.
Sean Hendricks finished as runner-up in 1:58.21 and
Brendan McCollum placed third with his time of 1:58.27.
Both
Luke Lyons and Mitchell Lienert notched regional performances during the 400 meters. Lyons broke the 49-second mark, running fourth in 48.97 seconds, with Lienert finishing right behind him in fifth place with his time of 49.42 seconds.
During the throwing events, Rochester had several top performances from
Jordan Johnson,
James O'Neill,
Zajans Crapo and
Nolan Ragland.
Johnson had the lone regional qualifier in a runner-up finish during the hammer throw, posting a distance of 50.89 meters. Ragland finished fourth with a distance of 47.95 meters in the same event.
In the javelin, Johnson led UR's finishers with a third place finish (47.39m) and was followed closely by Crapo in fourth (47.32m) and O'Neill in fifth (46.62m).
O'Neill was Rochester's top finisher in both the shot put (13.36 meters) and discus (39.78 meters). The senior was runner-up in the discus and finished third in the shot put. Adding to his busy day, Johnson was third in the discus with a mark of 39.77 meters and Crapo finished fourth at 38.86 meters.
Rochester will host the UR Alumni Invitational next weekend for its next competition, with that meet being one of two home contests this season at Fauver Stadium.
