SELINSGROVE, PA – The University of Rochester men's track and field team saw its 4x400 meter relay team break the school record, highlighting day one of competition at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Championships at Susquehanna University's Doug Arthur Stadium.
UR's relay team of
Mitch Lienert,
Gabe Lundy,
Max Creamer and
Luke Lyons finished fifth in a time of 3:16.86, ranking as the teams top scorers on the opening day of competition. The group established a new school record, bettering the old mark that was set back in the 2019 season by Wells Coalfleet, Mark Westman, Chris Dalke and Dokata Kosi Banchale.
The Yellowjackets finished Wednesday's action with 5 total team points, ranking tied for 23rd of 31 teams that scored a point on the opening day. A total of 61 teams have a men's athlete entered in the competition.
Rochester's other day one scorer was senior
Frederick Liu in the long jump. He finished eighth with a jump of 6.64 meters. The long jump featured four other jumpers, including
Manny Eribo who was 13th at 6.53 meters,
Kyle Lane who was 22nd at 6.35 meters and
Sam Lorenzetti who was 25th with a jump of 6.28 meters.
Brunacini set a PR in the steeplechase.
A pair of distance runners posted strong results and new personal bests towards the end of Wednesday's events. Senior
Nate Brunacini was ninth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:31.05, while junior
Nick Gaitanis was 13th in the 5000 meters with his time of 15:07.15.
Sophomore
Gabe Thyne excelled during the opening five events in the decathlon, and currently sits in first place among 13 athletes in the multi-event competition. He scored 3,324 points on the first day and was top-3 in four of the events.
Thyne was first among decathletes in the long jump with a 6.74 meter leap and in the 400 meters with a time of 49.91 seconds. Additionally, the sophomore was runner-up with a 1.81 meter high jump and was third in the 100 meters, sprinting to an 11.50 second finish. All four were new personal-bests.
Additionally, UR had athletes compete in the 110 meter hurdles, 100 meters and javelin on day one.
Peter Brodnik was 12th in the hurdles in 15.35 seconds, with teammate
Aeden Angelone ranking 22nd with a personal-record time of 16.02 seconds.
During the 100 meters, sophomore
P.J. London was 23rd of 48 runners in 11.10 seconds and
Jordan Johnson placed 22nd in the javelin with a toss of 42.43 meters.
