Josephine Libby of the University of Rochester women's tennis team was edged in straight sets during the opening round of the NCAA Division III Singles Championships at the USTA National Tennis Campus.
Libby, the nationally ranked #25 player in Division III women's singles, was matched up with Leila Epstein of Wesleyan University during Friday's opening round.
Epstein was #5 ranked Wesleyan's primary number two player this season and was ranked #13 in the Northeast Region entering the match. Libby, meanwhile was #11 in the latest regional rankings, in addition to earning a national ranking following the fall season.
The two battled even for the opening four games of the match. After the 2-2 start, Epstein rattled off four straight wins to swipe the opening set by a 6-2 score.
In set two, Epstein started out with a win in the opening game, but Libby quickly responded to even the things up at 1-1.
Two straight game wins from Epstein pulled the Wesleyan player up 3-1 and in control of the set.
Over the next four games, the pair traded two games apiece, each holding serve, as Epstein took a 5-3 lead. She then closed out the win, stealing a break of serve in the ninth game to win 6-3 and advance to the second round.
The NCAA appearance for Libby was the second straight for Rochester's top player. She finished the year with a spectacular 21-5 record, ranking as the tenth most singles wins in a single-season at Rochester.
