PITTSFORD, NY – Two University of Rochester decathletes closed out their seasons on Friday, competing at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at St. John Fisher College.
Senior
Alex Opsahl and junior
Aeden Angelone took to the track and field in the final five events of the two-day, ten-event decathlon at nationals.
Opsahl ended in 13th place with his score of 6,384 points, while Angelone ended with 5,783 points, placing 20th in the field.
The pair were neck-and-neck with one another for most of the day until Angelone cramped up and was unable to finish the last event of the competition, the 1500 meters.
To start the day, Opsahl clocked in with a time of 16.05 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles, establishing another new personal-best time during his maiden NCAA appearance. That time scored him 727 points, the most of any event on day two and ranked 11th. Angelone finished right behind with a 16.12 second time in that event, scoring 719 points towards his score.
Angelone was tied for 11th in the decathlon
pole vault competition
The next event was the discus where Angelone led the UR duo with a 34.40 meter toss, finishing ninth in the field to score 552 points. Opsahl's mark of 33.49 meters was again 11th in the decathlon field and scored 534 points.
During the pole vault, the third event of the day, Angelone cleared 3.90 meters and Opsahl finished at 3.70 meters. With two events remaining, Angelone was 13th and Opsahl was right behind in 14th.
In the penultimate event of the decathlon, Angelone finished 13th in the javelin with a 44.85 meter heave, scoring 513 points. Opsahl added 480 points to his total score with a 42.58 meter throw.
The decathlon's final event, the 1500 meters, wrapped up the day two competition at St. John Fisher's Polisseni Track and Field Complex.
Opsahl had his best finish of the day, ranking eighth in the field with a new personal-record of 4:41.73, scoring 669 points to bump up two spots on the final standings table. Angelone tried to battle through the race, but the grueling ten-event competition over the two days took its toll and the junior bowed out the third of four laps in the race.
The NCAA appearance wraps up tremendous seasons for both of the multi-event competitors, as Opsahl claimed the Liberty League title earlier this month and earned his first nationals berth. Angelone also qualified for the NCAA indoor championships in the heptathlon, becoming only the second Yellowjacket male to compete in the multi-events in the same season both indoors and outdoors.
Day three of the Division III Championships takes place on Saturday and features two additional Yellowjackets, as
Cole Goodman takes part in the triple jump and
Scott Sikorski runs the 1500 meter final.
