Box Score 2 GENEVA, NY – Junior
Josephine Libby of the University of Rochester women's tennis team played in a pair of thrilling three-set matches in the third and quarterfinal rounds, winning both, to reach to the semifinals at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships at William Smith College on Sunday and Monday.
Libby, a 2021 All-American, won both of her Sunday matches in nail biters, defeating Aira Abalos of The College of New Jersey in the round of 16 before edging Vassar's Macey Dowd in the quarterfinals.
During the day's first match, Libby easily took the opening set by a 6-2 score against Abalos, a 9/16 seeded player. Abalos responded with a 6-1 win in the second set, forcing a race-to-10 third set tiebreaker. Libby battled back and emerged with a 10-5 win to reach the quarters.
Libby, the bracket's top seeded player, matched up with another seeded player, 5/8 Dowd of Vassar in the next round. Dowd jumped ahead early, winning 7-5 in the opening set. Libby settled in during set two, winning 6-1, forcing another tiebreaker. Similar to the earlier match, Libby stayed calm in the high-pressure third set, winning 10-4 to advance to Monday's final day of competition.
In the semifinals, Libby squared off with third seeded Erin McCusker of Vassar on Monday's final day on action. The match began at the outdoor courts before rains came, forcing play to move indoors. McCusker, who didn't need three sets in either of her Sunday matches, used the added rest to earn a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Rochester's top player.
The semifinal run for Libby is her second straight, as she also dropped her appearance at ITA Regionals last year in the second to final round. As a first-year in 2021, Libby reached the third round of the tournament.
