PITTSFORD, NY – The University of Rochester women's track and field team was terrific in action at Nazareth University's Golisano Training Center on Saturday afternoon, competing in the Nazareth Conference Challenge Cup.
Overall, UR ranked third of nine teams in the team scoring competition, recording 85 team points. In the combined conference standings, UR and Ithaca College took home the title with a two-school score of 195.5 points, just beating out the SUNYAC teams, SUNY Cortland and SUNY Geneseo who combined to score 184 points.
Rochester as a team piled up four event wins, nine top-3 performances, 11 All-Atlantic Regional qualifying marks and 7 current marks inside the NCAA Division III top-25 performance list.
Junior
Megan Bell and senior
Madeline O'Connell were both double-winners on the day. O'Connell captured first in the pole vault and the 200 meters, while Bell was on UR's winning 4x400 meter relay and won the individual 400 meter race.
O'Connell cleared 3.90 meters in the pole vault, easily hitting the AAR qualifying standard and ranking #3 (with her season-best being ahead of her), in Division III. She also is ranked in the top-10 in the 200 meters, sitting #9 in D3 after crossing the finish in 25.37 seconds, a new meet record and AAR mark.
Bell's individual win was a 58.51 second time in the 400 meters, moving her to #13 on the Division III performance list. She, along with teammates
Nora Chen,
Kate Isaac and
Rita Sciortino combined for a 3:59.51 second run in the relay, earning first place and an Atlantic Region performance. That group currently is inside the top-10 in Division III this season.
In addition to running on the winning relay, Isaac and Chen completed a 1-2-3 finish in the 400 meters behind Bell. The terrific race saw all three runners break 59 seconds, with Isaac finishing at 58.68 seconds and Chen ranking third at 58.88 seconds.
Bell won two events.
Senior
Sennett Turner earned an All-Atlantic time in the 5000 meters, clocking in at 17:48.41, ranking second in the race. Turner sits inside Division III's top-25 during that event this season.
In the field,
Deziree Garrick posted two AAR performances, coming in the weight throw and shot put. Garrick ranked seventh in both events, posting a distance of 11.73 meters in the shot put and 14.88 meters in the weight throw.
Teammate
Cora Rose also was a regional qualifier in the shot put, ending third with a toss of 12.34 meters.
Liv Ilasz sneaked out a point in the weight throw, posting an eighth place finish at 14.06 meters.
Senior
Alyssa Hoogs was UR's top horizontal jumper on Saturday, finishing fifth in the triple jump at 10.90 meters and seventh in the long jump at 5.14 meters. Hoogs' performance in the triple jump hit the regional qualifying mark.
Other scorers on the day for the Yellowjackets included the 4x200 meter relay team of
Maya Hatch,
Jael Ernest Fleurant,
Raquella Casserino and
Toni Adewakun, along with
Emily Dill in the 800 meters. The relay finished fourth in 1:52.77, while Dill finished in eighth place, crossing the stripe in 2:26.15.
