CHICAGO, IL – The University of Rochester women's swimming and diving team secured seventh place at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Saturday, wrapping up the four-day competition at the University of Chicago's Ratner Athletics Center.
Throughout the competition, the Rochester team secured 468.5 points, ranking seventh among the eight schools. #2 Emory University took the team title, with 7th-ranked Chicago and 6th-ranked NYU scoring the second and third spots, respectively.
On the final day, two breaststroke swimmers,
Ariana Pasquella and
Gloria Ng closed out strong meets with results in the 'B' final of the 200 breast. Pasquella ended 12th in 2:23.22, while Ng finished 14th in 2:23.44. That was a reversal from the morning prelims where Ng edged out Pasquella.
Rachele Bachmann secured a top-20 result in the 200 butterfly, ending 19th in 2:12.04 in the Saturday finals.
Teammate
Sophia Dmytruk finished 22nd in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.13, while
Simone Lin and
Leah Tang each finished in 24th place in freestyle events. Lin competed in the 1650 freestyle and touched in 18:36.78, while Tang finished in 53.42 seconds in the 100 free.
Closing out the competition was UR's 400 freestyle relay team of
Deniz Yardimci,
Morgan Edstrom,
Adele Hellstrom and Tang. The group posted a seventh place result, swimming a time of 3:38.71.
During the preliminaries, Ng posted UR's best, ranking 14th in the breaststroke to qualify for the evening's final. Ng swam a 2:24.64 time, while Pasquella finished just seconds behind her, reaching the finish in 2:24.90 to also qualify for the 'B' final in 15th. Junior
Madeline Lemza added an alternate spot for Rochester, finishing 25th with a time of 2:34.63.
In the backstroke, Dmytruk started the Yellowjackets' day with their first qualifier, clocking in with a time of 2:08.70, good for 21st, to earn a spot in Saturday evening's 'C' final, while
Katherine Hegblom scored the first alternate spot with a 25th-place finish, touching the wall in 2:11.57.
Tang then matched Dmytruk's finish in the 100-yard freestyle, with her time of 53.35 netting the junior 21st in the prelims and a spot in the 'C' final.
In the morning's final prelim, Rachele Bachman notched Rochester's last qualifier, swimming a season-best 2:11.24 time to finish 17th, while
Elana Greenberg and
Izzy Stevenson took home both alternate spots. Greenberg swam a 2:18.88 time to score the first alternate spot, finishing 25th, while Stevenson came in 26th and earned the second alternate spot with a 2:20.10 time.
