BROCKPORT, NY – The University of Rochester women's track and field team produced seven All-Atlantic Regional qualifying performances and turned in a second place team finish at the SUNY Brockport Multi & Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Brockport's Special Events and Recreation Center.
UR as a team compiled a score of 85 points in standings, ranking second among the 14 teams that competed in the meet. SUNY Geneseo finished in first place with a score of 184.5, with Rochester following. Host SUNY Brockport ended third with 83 points.
The Yellowjackets had one event win on the day, coming from senior
Madeline O'Connell in the 60 meters. O'Connell sprinted to a finish in 7.95 seconds, earning an AARTFC time. Senior teammate
Kate Isaac finished third just .02 seconds behind in what proved to be a very close race, as the top-3 finishers finished in 7.95, 7.96 and 7.97 seconds.
In addition to her win, O'Connell finished runner-up in the pole vault with a height of 3.45 meters, another regional qualifying performance.
Junior
Megan Bell also finished runner-up in two separate events, posting regional qualifying times in both. Bell finished the 400 meters in 58.72 seconds, a time which ranks inside Division III's top-25 so far this season. Later on in the 200 meters, Bell finished second again, clocking in with a time of 26.19 seconds.
Joining Bell in the top-4 in the 200 meters was first-year
Nora Chen who finished in fourth in 26.51 seconds. Chen added a fifth place result in the 60 meter hurdles event as well, crossing the finish line in 9.81 seconds.
Two Yellowjacket throwers also produced AARTFC qualifying marks. In the shot put,
Cora Rose finished fourth with a heave of 11.99 meters. Teammate
Deziree Garrick was third in the weight throw with a mark of 15.26 meters, with both hitting the regional standard. Garrick added a seventh place scoring performance in the shot put with an 11.43 meter mark.
During the 3000 meters, junior
Meredith Crockett placed fifth in a time of 11:05.86. That finish was matched by first-year
Emily Dill in the 600 meters, with Dill crossing the finish in 1:44.02.
UR had two scorers in the mile run, with senior
Sennett Turner leading the way in 5:23.25, placing sixth. Teammate
Ellie Ponko ended eighth, clocking in at 5:27.02.
During the long jump event, a pair of Rochester teammates battled it out for the final scoring spot, with senior
Alyssa Hoogs ranking eighth at 4.98 meters. Hoogs edged out
Ashleigh Barrett who placed ninth, just one centimeter behind.
Up next for the Yellowjackets is a two-meet weekend next Friday and Saturday. Several UR athletes will compete at the Boston University Valentines Invitational on February 9-10, with the remaining members of the squad taking to the track and field at the RIT Friday Night Invite on February 9.
