UR Men Hit 14 Regional Marks at Spring Twilight

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester men's track & field team turned in a banner day at their UR Spring Twilight on Friday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium, breaking a school record, notching 17 new personal bests, tallying 14 All-Atlantic Region Track & Field (AARTFC) qualifiers, six event wins and placing two marks on the NCAA Division III Outdoor Qualifying List.
 
The Yellowjackets opened their day with a school-record performance, as UR's 4x100-meter relay team of Evan Bryant, Mitch Lienert, P.J. London and Manny Eribo combined to break the school record for the second time this season, winning the 4x100 relay with a 42.08s time, UR's first AARTFC qualifier.
 
James Catania quickly added another regional qualifier in the 1,500 meters, coming in second with a time of 3:59.34, while Nolan Goldthwaite set a new PR with his 4:04.48 time and sixth-place finish.
 
Two of UR's 4x100-meter relay squad then placed in the top eight of the 400 meters, with Lienert pacing the pair with a third-place finish and 49.90s time. Bryant finished seventh, setting a new PR of 50.50, while Gabe Thyne joined the duo in the top eight with a fourth-place result (50.08).
 
In the 100 meters, London notched an AARTFC qualifier with a second-place finish and a 10.95s time, while Eribo clocked in at 11.17s, good for seventh and a PR. Skye Crocker was UR's top finisher in the 800 meters, finishing fourth (1:57.46), while three 'Jacket first-years finished in the top eight of the 400-meter hurdles with Mark Magyar finishing second (57.78), Nick Krein placing fourth (58.62) and Elijah VanHoover crossing the finish line in sixth (58.62) with all three setting new high marks.
 
Lienert and London would run their final event of the day in the 200 meters, with London scoring another AARTFC qualifier with his third-place result and 21.99s time, a new PR, while Lienert finished fourth with a time of 22.22.
 
Nick Gaitanis added UR's last AARTFC qualifier on the track in the 5,000 meters, finishing third with yet another PR of 15:04.76, with Drew Garringer joining the senior in the top eight (15:52.75, 7th).
 
The Yellowjacket men would wrap up their day on the track with the 4x400-meter relay, with UR's 'A' squad finishing second and the 'B' team placing fourth. Colin Hascup, Daniel Ford, Crocker and Sean Hendricks ran on the 'A' squad, clocking in at 3:28.95, while Arturo Contreras Jr., Diego De Los Santos, Andrew Scheible and Jonathan Sullo crossed the finish line in 3:39.93 for the 'B' squad.
 
Over in the field events, Rochester placed at least three Yellowjackets in the top eight of nearly every throwing event, beginning with the shot put. Ethan Beer led three top-eight finishers in the shot put with his 14.69m throw, good for second and an AARTFC qualifier, while Dylan Rykert set a new PR with his 13.97m throw and fourth-place finish and Kevin Fobare finished seventh (12.91m).
 
In the hammer throw, UR took five of the top six spots, with Nolan Ragland claiming the event win with an AARTFC qualifying 53.50m throw. Jordan Johnson finished second (51.79m), also hitting the AARTFC mark, while Zajans Crapo (4th, 48.16m), Armaan Butler (5th, 47.84m) and Fobare (6th, 47.52m) rounded out the top six.
 
Four 'Jackets also scored in the discus, with Johnson leading the field this time with a third-place result and 44.14m throw, another regional qualifier. Beer finished right behind Johnson in fourth with a 42.14m toss, while Fobare placed sixth (38.59m) and Rykert finished eighth (37.88m).
 
Crapo was UR's lone finisher in the javelin, placing third with a new personal-best throw of 53.29m, good enough to hit the AARTFC mark.
 
Lastly in the jumping events, UR hit five AARTFC qualifiers, won all four events and two Yellowjackets placed leaps on the NCAA DIII Outdoor Qualifying List. Kyle Lane won the long jump with a 6.97m leap, the 47th-best long jump in DIII this season, a new PR and an AARTFC qualifier. Maxwell Zielonka also placed in the top eight for UR, finishing fifth with a 6.48m leap.
 
In the triple jump, Reward Mulauzi's 13.85m leap earned the first-year a first-place finish and is currently the 49th-longest triple jump in DIII. Mulauzi's leap was also a new PR and AARTFC qualifier, while Eribo (3rd, 13.00m) and Joseph Smith (4th, 12.93m) also placed in the event.
 
Cody Reeth won the pole vault competition, qualifying for regionals and setting a new PR with his 4.50m vault, while Aadit Jain won the high jump, surpassing the 1.95m bar to also qualify for the AARTFC. And for the second-straight week, Tate Finger joined Jain in the top six, finishing at 1.80, good for sixth.
 
Rochester next heads to Troy, NY to compete at the 2024 Liberty League Outdoor Track & Field Championships, beginning on Friday, May 3 at 12:00 p.m.
