Cole Goodman '25, a member of the University of Rochester men's track & field team, will represent the University at the 2024 United States Track & Field Olympic Team Trials later this month.
Â
Goodman, Rochester's most recent national champion, will compete for a spot on Team USA in the triple jump, an event in which the junior captured the NCAA Division III title last month at the Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Â
The United States Track & Field Olympic Trials run from June 21 through June 30 and will take place at the University of Oregon's home track, Hayward Field, in Eugene, Oregon.
Â
Goodman (Guttenberg, NJ/Bergen County Academies) achieved the minimum qualifying standard for the Olympic Team Trials in his national championship winning performance, posting a distance of 15.76 meters (51'8.5'') on his sixth and final attempt at NCAA's. He became just the fourth NCAA champion in University of Rochester men's track and field history, and established a top-10 mark all-time in Division III history with that distance.
Â
The men's triple jump at the Olympic Team Trials will feature 23 total individuals. The qualifying round will take place starting at 6:20 p.m. (Pacific Time) on Friday, June 28. The top-12 will then jump again in the finals of the event, set to take place on Sunday, June 30, starting at 3:55 p.m. (Pacific Time).
Â
In order to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, jumpers need to hit the overall Olympic standard of 17.22 meters. A maximum of three individuals from the United States will qualify in each individual event, should the entry standard for the Olympics be met.
Â
A 7-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III All-American, Goodman will become the first ever Yellowjacket men's track & field athlete to participate at the United States Olympic Trials.
Â
Previously, Rochester's Tom Tuori '87, hit the qualifying standard and was set to compete at the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the 1500 meters, but never actually took part in the Trials after an injury kept him out of the competition. Tuori was Rochester's most recent national champion in men's track & field prior to Goodman, capturing the 1987 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field 1500-meter title. He also is still the University of Rochester school record-holder in that event, with a time of 3:41.56.
Â
Rochester's Goodman will be one of five current Division III athletes, spanning both the men's and women's competitions, that are accepted to participate in this year's Olympic Trials. Joining Goodman in the triple jump will be Shelvin Garrett II (UW-Whitewater), the triple jump runner-up and indoor national champion this season. Two individuals, Sam Blaskowski (UW-Lacrosse) and Davian Willems (UW-Oshkosh), will run in the 100 meters, while Eric Gregory (Gallaudet) qualified in the 400 meters.
Â
Goodman is the current University of Rochester record holder in both the long jump and triple jump, both for the indoor track & field season and outdoor track & field season.
Â
Additionally, there are several other Rochester-area connections who are headed to Eugene for the Olympic Trials. Kyle Rollins, a recent graduate of St. John Fisher University and current Assistant Coach at SUNY Geneseo will compete in the men's high jump. Samantha Watson, a Rush-Henrietta High School graduate and former collegiate athlete at Texas A&M, will run in the women's 800 meters. In the women's pole vault, Brynn King of Roberts Wesleyan University will take part in the competition, while Alexa Wandy, a current Nazareth University Assistant Coach and SUNY Geneseo graduate will jump in the women's triple jump event.
