EUGENE, OR – University of Rochester rising senior
Cole Goodman '25, took to the runway last night on the national stage to close out his 2023-24 season, competing at the United States Track & Field Olympic Team Trials at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
Goodman, the reigning NCAA Division III Outdoor champion in the triple jump, ended in 21st place during the competition that featured past Olympic champions, world champions and United States champions, along with several NCAA Division I jumpers.
That result did not qualify Goodman for the top-12 in the competition, as those individuals will advance to Sunday's final round where the top-3 finishers will make the United States Olympic Team, advancing to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (should they hit the Olympic standard mark of 17.22 meters).
The cutoff to make the top-12 during Friday's qualifying jumps was 15.87 meters (52' 0.75'').
Goodman, who became the first University of Rochester track and field athlete to compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials, established an early clean mark during the competition, hitting 15.07 meters to rank 11th after the first set of jumps across both flights.
There was a 1-centimeter difference in round two, as Goodman jumped 15.06 meters before popping off his top mark of 15.14 meters (49' 8.25'') of the night.
NCAA Division I runner-up Russell Robinson of the University of Miami led the qualifying round with a leap of 17.14 meters. Salif Mane, this years NCAA Division I champion, representing Farleigh Dickinson, ranked second at 16.97 meters.
Other top competitors in the field that qualified for the final include Donald Scott (16.77m) who finished seventh at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games and Christian Taylor (16.08 meters), the Olympic gold medalist from both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
