UR in Second After Day One of Northeast Elite

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – University of Rochester men's golf opened the two-day Northeast Elite Invitational with a 285, one-over score, good for second among the twenty competing teams on Saturday at Williamsport County Club.
 
With their opening round, the 'Jackets sit in second place, three strokes behind Trinity (CT), who leads the field at two-under. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute rounds out the top three at two-over, with six teams sitting at six-over or better through the first round of competition.
 
Gary Pan led the way for the Yellowjackets on day one, shooting three-under, tied for third on the individual leaderboard. Pan birdied three holes on the front nine and added another birdie on the par-five 16 to head into the clubhouse at three-under.
 
Individually, Hamilton's Ramon Aroca Gonzalez and Penn College's Peyton Mussina were the day's top shooters, each carding a four-under, 67, round. Pan and St. John Fisher's Nick Tellone both sit tied for third, having shot three-under on day one of the competition.
 
Galen Fowles carded UR's second-best score of the day, shooting 37 (+1) on the front nine and 34 (-1) on the back nine to finish the day at par. Fowles shot a pair of eagles on the par-five six and 18 holes and added birdies on the first and 16 holes as well. Fowles sits in a tie for 13th overall headed into the final day of the invitational.
 
Shibo Wang was the Yellowjackets' next highest-finisher at one-over-par, with three birdies on his scorecard, two on the front nine and another on the back nine, to finish just inside the top 20 in a tie for 19th after day one.
 
First-years Alvin Su and Eddie Ren rounded out the Yellowjacket lineup, with Su shooting 74 on the par-71 course to finish three-over, while Ren shot five-over for the day at 75. Su wrapped up the back nine with a birdie and eagle sandwiched around a bogey, while Ren also shot below par on the 18th hole, notching a birdie on the par-five, 496-yard hole.
 
Sui is tied for 42nd headed into the final day of competition on Sunday, while Ren is tied for 56th.
 
Luke Evans also competed for Rochester as an individual, notching one of four eagles on the day for the 'Jackets, as well as three birdies, to finish the day one-under-par with an 18-hole score of 70, tied for eighth-place.
 
The Yellowjackets will hit the course for day two of the Northeast Elite Invitational in Williamsport, PA on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 9:00 a.m.
