In a historic milestone for the University of Rochester, University Trustee Tyler Zachem '88 and Karen Zachem have established the first-ever endowment supporting a coaching position. Made during For Ever Better: The Campaign for the University of Rochester, the gift establishes the Michael & Connie Neer Family Head Men's Basketball Coach fund and marks a significant milestone toward the Department of Athletics and Recreation's 2030 campaign goal.

"We offer our sincere thanks to Tyler and Karen for their visionary generosity and for establishing our first endowed coaching position," says President Sarah Mangelsdorf. "Their commitment enhances our ability to provide students with integral collegiate experiences that extend beyond the classroom. The enduring support of this endowed position will strengthen the role athletics plays in our broader educational mission and benefit our students—and the University—for years to come."

The Zachems' generosity will provide permanent support to the head men's basketball coach, ensuring long-term stability and excellence in the program. Their gift honors the legacy of Tyler Zachem's former coach, Mike Neer '88W (MS), and affirms the Zachems' commitment to the basketball program—celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2026—and the University as a whole. Additionally, their philanthropy aligns with the University's Boundless Possibility strategic plan by supporting top-tier leadership and enriching the overall student experience.

"This gift is our way of recognizing Coach Neer's role in my life and how being a basketball player at Rochester gave me skills that have helped me personally and professionally," says Tyler Zachem, a multi-talented forward on the team from 1984 to 1988, who is one of many athletes who credit Neer's mentorship with their growth. "It's important to Karen and me to support education and athletics so that future generations have opportunities to excel in college and benefit from the same kind of guidance and team experience that I had."

Neer was a legendary University of Rochester men's basketball coach for 34 seasons, retiring as the winningest coach in program history with 563 victories and ranking 14th all-time in Division III wins. He led Rochester to 12 NCAA tournament appearances, including a national championship in 1990 and multiple Final Four and title game runs, and was named National Coach of the Year. Beyond wins, his teams earned sportsmanship and academic honors, and his influence extended well beyond the court. He was inducted into the Rochester Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.

"This gesture truly means a great deal to my family and me, and I know how much it means to Athletics and the University," says Mike Neer. "I've been extremely fortunate to coach outstanding young men for many years, and I'm grateful to the Zachems to be honored in this way. Connie and I enjoyed with pride watching our students graduate and go on to accomplish incredible things in their lives and careers, just like Tyler has."

George VanderZwaag, executive director of the Department of Athletics and Recreation, adds, "We are grateful to Tyler and Karen for their leadership and continued support. As we strive to advance our educational mission, this commitment is a significant milestone for our department. It supports our goal to develop programs and facilities that position us to attract the very best students from around the country—and we retain and graduate our students by providing them with the very best educational opportunity. The quality of our coaching staff is essential to our success."

The basketball program is one of 23 varsity sports at URochester.

Tyler Zachem: On and off the court

A four-year standout on the University of Rochester basketball team, Tyler Zachem made an immediate impact as the 1985 ECAC Upstate New York Division III Rookie of the Year—the first Rochester player to earn the honor. A two-year captain, he helped lead the Yellowjackets to two ECAC postseason bids and graduated ranked second in career rebounds (773) and fifth in scoring (1,181). He also earned Academic All-America honors and was featured in Sports Illustrated's 1987–88 College Basketball issue. In 2005, he was inducted into the Rochester Athletics Hall of Fame. Off the court, he excelled academically as a Phi Beta Kappa member and president of the Keidaeans senior honor society, receiving the 1988 Terry Prize for exemplary contributions to campus life.

After graduating with a bachelor's degree in political science, Tyler Zachem earned an MBA from Harvard in 1993 and went on to a successful career in private equity. He is the CEO and founder of Broad Sky Partners, a firm that invests in leading middle-market business services companies. Before Broad Sky, he held senior roles at The Carlyle Group, including co-head of its long dated investment platform and co-chair of the investment committee for its middle-market platform. Earlier in his career, he worked with MidOcean Partners and its predecessor, DB Capital Partners.

Tyler Zachem has been actively engaged with the University as a member of the former New York City Regional Cabinet and with many Class of 1988 reunion celebrations. In 2025, he joined the University's Board of Trustees and became co-chair of Athletics' For Ever Better campaign committee. For years, the Zachems have generously supported the men's basketball program at Rochester. Tyler Zachem is also a member of the New York advisory board of the Posse Foundation, a not-for-profit organization focused on college access and leadership development.
