ITHACA, NY – The University of Rochester women's swimming and diving team used seven top-3 results to keep pace in the team scoring on day two of the Ithaca Bomber Invitational at the Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium.
Overall, after 13 women's team events have been scored, the Yellowjackets have 1,331.5 points, trailing host Ithaca by just over 100 points following day two (not including the team diving event scoring). The Bombers lead the seven-team field with 1,436 points. Vassar is a distant third with 794 points while Smith sits fourth at 727 points.
Rochester picked up two event wins on the day, one individual and one coming in the team diving event.
First-year
Ally Mackey was first to the wall in the 400-yard individual medley, scoring a time of 4:40.72. Teammate
Ava Kaufman was third in 4:48.03 also swimming in the A final, while
Rachel Ruminer clocked in at 4:52.96 in seventh place.
Rachele Bachmann ended first in the B final, scoring in ninth place overall with a time of 4:52.65.
URochester's
Kaela Springer,
Julia Sides and
Lilia MacKenzie made up the team diving lineup, with that trio scoring 265.05 points to earn the event win, edging Ithaca's A group by just over six points. The team diving event features each teams three divers completing two dives, with three dives coming on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Additionally, the six dives must make up a legal 6-dive list.
The Yellowjacket relays had a strong day in the pool, with three of the four relay squads ending with top-5 results. During the morning 800-yard freestyle relay final, the team of
Julianne Weaver,
Amelia Hardiman,
Adele Hellstrom and
Morgan Edstrom finished runner-up in 7:53.17.
Later on in the evening session, the relay contested was the 200 medley, with both the A and B entries ending in the top-5.
Olivia Dewar,
Ariana Pasquella,
Sophia Dmytruk and Edstrom clocked in at 1:48.77 for third place, while
Phoebe Hamblett,
Gina Rubiano,
Isabel Phillips and
Addison Powers finished fifth in 1:51.24.
Rochester's top-scoring event was the 200-yard freestyle, with eight swimmers qualifying for the evening finals. Hellstrom led three A finalists, ranking third in 1:56.83. Weaver touched in 1:57.61 to end sixth and Edstrom was eighth (1:59.17). During the B final, Hardiman was first to the wall in 1:57.91 for ninth place overall.
Paige Lovelace ended tenth in 1:58.87 while
Izzy Stevenson touched in 1:59.99, good for 12th. The C finalists in the same event were
Marin Ievers in 17th (2:01.39) and
Courtney Dietrich in 20th (2:03.50).
The 'Jackets also saw success in the 100 butterfly, with five individuals making the finals. Dmytruk finished sixth with a time of 59.36 seconds, edging out Powers by .23 seconds who ended in seventh (59.59 seconds). Phillips finished first in the B final for ninth overall in 1:00.18, while two swimmers made the C final,
Mari Finkelstein (19th, 1:01.75) and
Katelyn Packer (1:01.89).
Pasquella picked up a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke, leading a trio of A finalists in that event. She clocked in at 1:05.86. Rubiano was fifth in 1:07.95, while
Sarah Leevan ended in seventh place, posting a time of 1:08.65. During the B final,
Hannah Gentile clocked in with a time of 1:11.17, ranking tenth overall.
Rochester's entries in the 100 backstroke finals were Hamblett, Dewar, Dmytruk and Powers. Dmytruk finished with the best time of the group at 59.67 seconds, but ended ninth overall after qualifying for the B final. Hamblett (6th, 1:00.04) and Dewar (8th, 1:01.08) were the A finalists, while Powers finished 12th overall (1:01.90).
The third and final day of the competition is on Saturday, with the morning session starting at 9 am, with sessions later in the day taking place at 1 pm and 6 pm.
