Men’s Squash Drops Neutral-Site Contest vs. #5 Virginia

ITHACA, NY – No. 14 University of Rochester men's squash fell to the 5th-ranked University of Virginia Cavaliers, 8-1, on Sunday in a neutral-site matchup hosted by Cornell at the Belkin Squash Courts.
 
Tom Whiteley picked up the Yellowjackets' lone win of the day, downing Dylan Moran at the No. 4 spot on the ladder, 11-2, 11-7, 11-2.
 
The Cavaliers picked up wins in each of the first five matches of the contest to secure the win, starting with Maxwell Velazquez's 3-0 win over Arnav Mandhana at the fifth spot, 11-8, 11-4, 11-7. Virginia quickly made it 2-0 and then 3-0 with sweeps at the No. 3 and 7 spots on the ladder.
 
Despite a hard-fought first game, Juan Jose Torres topped Dhirren Rajarathinam at the No. 3 spot, 11-9, 11-3, 11-5, while Ewan Harris defeated Van Inman-Benavente at the No. 7 spot, 11-1, 11-3, 11-3.
 
Virginia earned another point at the No. 9 spot, where CJ Baldini beat Preston Wu: 11-6, 12-10, 11-5, to bring up match point leading 4-0. And while Yash Fadte gave Karim Elbarbary nearly all he could handle at the No. 1 spot, the Cavaliers clinched the win with a 3-1 win at the No. 1 spot: 15-13, 6-11, 11-6, 11-4.
 
Whiteley earned UR's lone win of the afternoon at the four spot to make it 5-1, before the Cavaliers wrapped up the match with three more wins at the No. 2, 6 and 8 spots.
 
Jake Koeppel took the third game from Nathan Rosenzweig at the sixth spot on the ladder, but fell, 3-1 (11-5, 11-5, 8-11, 11-3), while Nic Gill opened his match at the No. 8 spot with an 11-8 win, but later dropped the match, 3-1 (8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-6) to UVA's Francis Hajek.
 
The Cavaliers then wrapped up the match with another sweep, as John Paul Tew topped Omar Zakaria at the No. 2 spot, 11-9, 12-10, 11-7.
 
With the win, No. 5 UVA moves to 10-3 on the year, while the 14th-ranked Yellowjackets drop to 8-7.
 
The Yellowjackets are back in Ithaca on Wednesday, Feb. 19, wrapping the regular season with a matchup against No. 9 Cornell at 6:00 p.m.
