Golf Wraps Up Spring Openers in NC, Ren Earns Individual Win

PINEHURST, NC/WHISPERING PINES, NC – First-year Eddie Ren of the University of Rochester golf team started off his spring semester with victory, capturing the medalist honors at the Hampden-Sydney Whispering Pines Invitational on Monday afternoon, during Rochester's spring break trip to North Carolina.
 
UR competed over Sunday and Monday at two events hosted by Hampden-Sydney College, with three individuals competing at Whispering Pines. The rest of the squad, and UR's scoring team lineup, were in action at the Tiger Invitational at Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst, NC.
 
Ren, competing as an individual at the event hosted at the Country Club of Whispering Pines, shot a day two score of one-over par 73, coupled with his 2-under round from Sunday to finish at one-under 143 for the event, two shots clear of the second place finisher from Roanoke.
 
The first-year feasted on the par-5 holes during the tournament, combining to finish 5-under on the longest holes on the course. Over the 36 holes, Ren finished with a tournament-leading eight birdies. There were 92 total golfers in the Whispering Pines event.
 
Joining Ren at Whispering Pines were first-year Galen Fowles and sophomore Arjun Aujla, with both golfers improving their scores on day two of the event. Fowles shot a 3-over 75 in round two to move up to a tie for 16th place in the tournament at 151. Aujla vaulted up the scoreboard 18 spots to finish tied for 22nd after shooting a 2-over 74 in Monday's final round. His 36-hole score was 153.
 
At the Tiger Invitational, Rochester competed against some of the top Division III teams and finished 17th among 20 schools. UR ended with a 309 on day two, completing the event with a 613 score over 36 holes.
 
Sophomore Shibo Wang and first-year Alvin Su paced the Yellowjackets with combined scores of 150. Wang shot a 76 (4-over) on Monday, while Su carded a second round 77 (5-over). Both ended in a tie for 39th place in the 100-player field.
 
UR's other two scoring golfers at Forest Creek also shot sub-80 rounds, with Josh Pethel carding a 77 (5-over) and Luke Evans ending with a 79 (7-over). Evans ended the event in a tie for 66th place, with a score of 155. Pethel finished at 158, ranking tied for 81st.
 
The final golfer in Rochester's lineup was Marshall Kim who shot an 88 on Monday, finishing with a two-day total of 171.
 
Up next, the Yellowjackets will remain in the South for their next event, the Jekyll Island Invitational on March 21-23 in Jekyll Island, Georgia.
