‘Jackets Make Cut at NCAA’s, Sit in 7th Place

VICTOR, NY – The University of Rochester golf team turned in another solid day on the course, despite wet, rainy and cold conditions, ranking seventh in the field at the NCAA Division III Championships at Cobblestone Creek Country Club.
 
Rochester's effort on day two saw the team score a 304 overall, among the best in the field on Wednesday, securing a spot in the final two rounds of the tournament, taking place at Midvale Country Club on Thursday and Friday.
 
The Yellowjackets have now made the cut for the first times since the 2014 NCAA Championship, after finishing outside the cutline in their last two nationals appearances, coming in 2017 and 2014.
 
UR's team total after 36 holes is 603, just eight strokes behind first place 5th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan who sits at 595 after Wednesday's round. The jam-packed leaderboard features #15 Kenyon and #9 Huntingdon in a tie for second at 597, while Carnegie Mellon (598), Aurora (600) and Methodist (601), all-top-15 teams in Division III sit in fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
 
Rochester was led on day two by first-year Alvin Su who carded a 74 (2-over) around the par-72, 6,770-yard course at Cobblestone Creek. Su's scorecard featured three birdies, including two on back-to-back holes on #15 and 16. After two days of play, Su sits inside the top-10 individually in a tie for eighth place, with 146 score.
 
Fellow first-year Eddie Ren carded a strong 75 (3-over) on Wednesday, vaulting up 30 spots on the individual leaderboard, into a tie for 45th place among the 225-golfer field. Ren sits at a 151 score through two rounds and has notched four birdies in each round, leading the Yellowjackets. Hit eight total holes under par are tied for fourth most among golfers in the field through 36 holes.
 
Sophomore Shibo Wang, the lone golfer in the lineup with NCAA experience, battled the elements and shot a 5-over par round of 77 during day two. Wang carded five bogeys and 13 pars on the day when pars proved to be a good score. The sophomore ranks 81st overall on the individual leaderboard with a two-day total of 154.
 
Joining Wang in 81st place overall is classmate Arjun Aujla who carded an 80 (8-over) during the second round. Aujla recorded two birdies on the day, coming on the par-4 fifth hole and par-5 16th hole.
 
UR's fifth golfer on the day was first-year Luke Evans who carded an 82 (10-over) to rank 124th in the field after two days of competition.
 
On the individual leaderboard, Bethel's Will Karkoc holds the lead with a 6-under score of 138. Only two other players, Edward Coffren of Lynchburg and Kevin Mu of Emory are under par, with Coffren at 141 (3-under) and Mu at 142 (2-under) through 36 holes.
 
Rochester gets an early tee time in round three, going off between 8 am and 8:36 am at Midvale Country Club along with Carelton College and Emory University.
