GENEVA, NY – A trio of Yellowjacket first-years led the University of Rochester women's tennis team on day one of the 2025 Mary Hosking Invitational, hosted by William Smith College as the Hobart and William Smith Tennis Center.
Esther Wang took the top spot in the Flight 'D' singles competition, defeating William Smith's Elizabeth Legg, 8-3 and St. Lawrence's Kate Butler, 8-2, in the quarterfinals and semifinals, before clinching the bracket with an 8-5 win over SLU's Alexandra Fuller.
In Flight 'C', both
Hailey Kornbluth and
Natalie Debowski picked up wins, with both set to play further on Sunday. Kornbluth opened singles play with an 8-7 victory over St. Lawrence's Ellie Mcdermed, winning 7-4 on the tiebreak, and then topped Bethany Walker of William Smith, 8-0.
On Sunday, Kornbluth will face RPI's Neha Saraswatula in the Flight 'C' semifinals, after Saraswatula topped Debowski to open her run to the semis.
Debowski dropped her opening match to Saraswatula, 8-3, but bounced back with an 8-2 victory over RIT's Anika Galkiewicz in the consolation quarterfinals, and will face Mcdermed in the consolation semifinals on Sunday.
Jasmin Toor and
Katie Yang both competed for Rochester in Flight 'B', with Yang picking up a victory. Yang topped RIT's Melanie Saborio, 8-3, before falling to RPI's Juliette Ceas, 8-1.
While Toor fell in her round of 16 matchup against Ithaca's Aenessa Rylski, 8-6, and then dropped an 8-5 contest to Union's Calista Finkelstein in the consolation quarterfinals.
Lilly Caldwell and
Lauren Kallas took the stage for URochester in Flight 'A' with both bowing out after the day's action. Caldwell won her first match against the Herons' Mae Kellersman, 8-2, and then fell to SLU's Angelica Aksdal-Jansen, 8-5, in the quarterfinals. While Kallas fell to Union's Chara Meidani, 8-3, and St. Lawrence's Ariane Karera, 8-3, in the consolation bracket.
In doubles action, Toor and Yang combined to pick up a 6-4 win over Ithaca's Ava Casell and Rylski in the 'A' flight round of 16, before falling to the St. Lawrence duo of Molly Jespersen and Aksdal-Jansen, 6-2.
Also in flight 'A', Caldwell and Kallas fell to RPI's Anushka Jaiswal and Nicole Ridenour, 6-0, and will play a consolation match tomorrow against St. Lawrence's Sarah Oldland and Elisa Iuri.
In doubles flight 'B', Debowski and Kornbluth will play for the title tomorrow, having earned a first-round bye before defeating Union's Sydney Alphabet and Megan McCusker, 6-0, in the quarterfinals, and William Smith's Madeleine Sutro and Martina Nicora, 6-2, in the semifinals.
The Yellowjackets will wrap up their time at the Mary Hosking Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 14, with play at the Hobart & William Smith Tennis Center in Geneva, NY beginning at 9:00 a.m.
