Paced by three runners in the top-10 finishers, the University of Rochester men's cross country team turned in a solid performance, ending third of 24 teams at the Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational on Saturday morning at Genesee Valley Park.
Graduate student
James Catania led the Yellowjackets with a third place finish overall, crossing the finish on the 8-kilometer course in 25:19.9. A pair of sophomore's,
Liam Sakakeeny and
Sam Cohen finished back-to-back in ninth and tenth place respectively, keeping the 'Jacket score low.
Sakakeeny finished in 25:50.1, while Cohen was five seconds behind in 25:55.7. Overall, 319 runners competed in the field.
Sophomore
Joe Berry was the fourth UR finisher in 23rd place overall, crossing the tape in 26:09.3, with classmate
Zach Terrano finishing off the Rochester scoring in 46th place overall. Terrano's time for the race was 26:37.8.
Continuing with the strong results from the sophomore class,
Jacob Bernd was URochester's first displacer in 55th place (26:49.2), with junior
Gus Smith finishing out the Yellowjackets placing runners at 71st in 27:10.2.
Others in the top-150 of the field for Rochester included junior
Jesse Rinzel in 104th (27:34.6), first-year
Austin Skeete 105th (27:34.8), first-year
Trevor Kuhlman in 119th (27:45.7) and junior
William Eskenas in 136th (27:56.8).
Overall in the team scoring, Rochester compiled 85 team points, ranking third among the 24-team field. SUNY Geneseo earned the win with 61 points, with crosstown rival RIT ranking second as a team with 68 points.
Rochester's alumni also enjoyed a solid effort, finishing as the sixth place team. Alumnus Scott Sikorski '23 finished as the overall race winner for the men, crossing the finish in 25:11.5. Other top-finishing alumni include
Vishal Yalamanchili '25 in eighth, and Adam Pacheck '14 in 24th place overall.
After a week off next weekend, the Yellowjackets return to racing on October 4 at the Fredonia Kara Hall Memorial Invite.
