Two School Records Fall on Day One of Conference Championships

2/11/2026 8:55:00 PM

CHICAGO – In two of the three events contested on day one of the 2026 University Athletic Association Championships, two University of Rochester swimming and diving records were broken by the Yellowjackets.

Both records fell during the 800 freestyle relay races, one coming as a leadoff leg in the men's event, while the other was the women's relay as a team result.

The individual record was set by senior Max McClung, leading off the relay during the evening session. McClung led off the 800 freestyle relay with a 200 yard split of 1:41.06, setting a new team record in the process. The record, which was the second-longest standing record for the URochester men's program, was previously set by John-Eric Andersson back in March of 1995, with his time being 1:41.13 in a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division III Championships.

McClung was joined on the relay by teammates Ryan Bowering, Connor Kann and Nate Attwell, with the group finishing in a time of 6:51.97, ranking seventh in the 'A' relay field. That full relay time is the second-best in school history.

On the women's side, four Yellowjacket women, Amelia Hardiman, Adele Hellstrom, Morgan Edstrom and Julianne Weaver, broke a five-year old school record in the 800 free relay, finishing with a time of 7:44.68.

McClung broke a record that was set back in 1995.

That time finished also finished in seventh during the women's 'A' final, breaking the previous school record set by Helena Bardsley, Lexi Cucchiaro, Leah Tang and Maggie Brennan back in December of 2021.

URochester's 'B' relay in the event finished in sixth during its heat (14th overall) with a time of 7:54.18. That team was made up of Ally Mackey, Paige Lovelace, Phoebe Hamblett and Katelyn Packer.

The 'B' relay during the men's event finished in 15th place, as Matthew Spence, Ben Friedberg, Venden Berge and Brandon Weaver posted a time of 7:05.11.

Earlier in the day, the diving portion of the meet also got underway, with two Yellowjacket divers competing in the men's 3-meter competition. Senior Brendan Habert and junior Max Wozinski finished next to one another in the standings, with Habert ending 11th with a finals score of 371.60 points and Wozinski scoring 365.20 points to rank 12th.

During the prelim session, Habert just missed making the 'A' final, ending ninth with a score of 383.95, while Wozinski was 12th, scoring 358.55 points.

On the team scoreboard, the Yellowjacket men sit in sixth place after day one, scoring 101 total points. The women's squad is seventh after the opening event of the week, with 72 points scored.

Day two of competition is the first full day of action, and begins at 10 am central time on Thursday at UChicago's Ratner Athletics Center.
