Emmett Hansen set a pair of new personal-best marks and sits 14th in the heptathlon through the first four events following the opening day of the 2025-26 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Hansen, seeded 17th coming into the Championships, has accumulated 2,674 points to sit in 14th place through the first four events of the heptathlon, the 60 meters, long jump, shot put and high jump.
Hansen got the heptathlon started with his best finish of the day, winning his heat in the 60 meters and finishing seventh overall with a new personal-best time of 7.203 seconds to earn 809 points.
Next up, Hansen placed 12th in the long jump with a 6.48m leap, improving on each successive jump, from 6.30m to 6.40m and then 6.48m to earn 693 points.
In the heptathlon shot put, Hansen came in 15th with a 10.98m toss, again set on his last attempt. Hansen's first throw came in at 10.81m, and after faulting on his second try, the sophomore's third throw came in at 10.98m, a new personal-best mark and good for 545 points.
Then, in the last heptathlon event of the day, the high jump, Hansen passed on the first three heights, made it over 1.68m, passed again, and then successfully made it over both the 1.74m and 1.77m bars before needing three tries to make it over his final height of 1.80m, finishing 14th and earning 627 points.
Through four events, Hansen is 365 points back of the leader, Wisconsin-River Falls junior Jacob Balcome, who is in first place with 3,039 points, 86 points ahead of Central College junior Kale Hobart in second.
Hansen will return to the track at the 2025-26 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, AL for the final three events of the heptathlon on Saturday, March 14, beginning with the 60-meter hurdles at 10:00 a.m. CT.
