PITTSFORD, NY – The University of Rochester golf team turned in a solid opening round of 292 on Friday afternoon, ranking tied for second among six teams at the annual Fred Kravetz Invitational at Locust Hill Country Club.
Rochester trails tournament leader John Carroll by six strokes after day one, with the Blue Streaks combining for a 286 score on Friday. UR is tied with Swarthmore at 292 in second, while McDaniel (298), Penn State Altoona (302) and Middlebury (312) round out the field.
Day two of the annual event hosted by the Yellowjackets is set for historic Oak Hill Country Club on Saturday, with round two tee times starting at 11 am.
Sophomore
Alvin Su leads URochester on the individual leaderboard, ranking tied for second with an opening round 70 (2-under) at the par-72, 6,635 layout at Locust Hill. Su fired four birdies in his round to go with two bogeys to reach his team-leading eighth stroke play round under par this year.
Also ranking in the top-10 individually was first-year
Anderson Palm who sits in a tie for eighth with an opening round 73 (1-over). Palm was sitting under par after his fourth birdie of the round on hole 17, but a double-bogey on his final hole of the day soured the strong finish.
Teammate
Josh Pethel carded a 74 (2-over) on day one, tying for 12th in the field. Pethel's scorecard featured three birdies, two of which came on back-to-back holes late in his opening nine.
The fourth scorer for the Yellowjackets starting lineup was
Galen Fowles who shot a 75 (3-over) on Friday. Fowles had a remarkable stretch from holes three through eight, in which the sophomore was 4-under par.
Wrapping up the 'Jacket starting five was junior
Arjun Aujla who carded a 78 in the opening round.
URochester also has two individuals playing in the event, with senior
Marshall Kim leading that duo, shooting a solid round of 2-over, 74. Kim was steady, recording two birdies, four bogeys and 12 pars on his scorecard and sits in a tie for 12th in the tournament.
Henry Zhong was the other UR individual, shooting an opening round 78 (6-over). He ranks in a tie for 26th.
