VERONA, NY – The University of Rochester golf team fired a team score of 293 in round one, but sits in third place among seven teams following the opening day of competition at the Liberty League Championship at the Turning Stone Resort Shenandoah Golf Club.
URochester sits third behind New York University and Skidmore College in the team standings. NYU fired a remarkable 8-under par round of 280 on Friday, while Skidmore is 11 strokes back with a 291. Rensselaer is fourth at 294, and Hobart sits one stroke behind that in fifth. St. Lawrence and Clarkson round out the standings.
Two Yellowjackets, junior
Arjun Aujla and sophomore
Alvin Su are tied for fourth place individually after shooting opening round 71's on the par-72, 7,013-yard course layout. Su carded two birdies, one bogey and 15 pars, while Aujla saw his card feature four birdies, three bogeys and 11 pars.
First-year
Anderson Palm was URochester's third scorer with a 3-over round of 75 on Friday. He had three birdies in his round, matching
Galen Fowles who ended at 4-over par, 76 in the opening round. Palm sits 19th and Fowles is 21st after 18 holes of play.
The final 'Jacket golfer was senior
Josh Pethel who opened the tournament with a 77, 5-over par. Pethel's round was highlighted by an eagle, two, on the par-4 16th hole. He is in 25th place following day one.
Tee times for the second round, set for Saturday, begin at noon. The event is a 54-hole tournament, with the team champion earning the Liberty League's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament next month.
