Six Wins Leads to Runner-Up Finisher for Rochester Women

CANTON, NY – The University of Rochester women's track and field team picked up six more event wins on day two of the Liberty League Outdoor Championships, ending in second place among eight teams at the conference championship meet hosted by St. Lawrence University.
 
In addition to the six wins, URochester had seven other top-3 performances on Saturday and piled up a whopping 20 All-Atlantic Region qualifying performances.
 
The Yellowjackets finished the two-day meets with 181 points to end in second place. Ithaca claimed the team title with 213 points. Vassar was third at 147.5, wile RPI was fourth at 125 points. RIT (73), St. Lawrence (42.5), Union (32) and Bard (2) rounded out the competing teams.
 
Juniors Nora Chen and Aimee Oszer combined for four victories on the afternoon for the Yellowjackets, with first-year Lauren Murphy and the 4x400 meter relay earning the other top spots on the podium.
 
Oszer was voted as the conference's women's Field Performer of the Meet after winning both the shot put and discus on Saturday. Oszer's shot put mark was 13.54 meters, establishing a new school record and #18 mark in Division III this season. The junior broke her own school record that she just set last week at the RIT Bill Q Invitational.
 
In the discus, Oszer finished first with a regional distance of 42.30 meters. Teammate Madison Vargas placed third in the discus (39.72 meters) and was fifth in the shot put (11.76 meters), scoring multiple points for the 'Jackets.
 
Chen was a double-winner, claiming first place in both the 400 meters and 400 meter hurdles. In the open 400, Chen ran a time of 56.82 seconds, move up to 11th on the Division III performance list at this point in the season. Later on in the hurdles, Chen established a new meet record in 1:00.94. The junior also set a new personal-best in the 100 meter hurdles, ending in second place in 14.33 seconds, setting a top-20 time in Division III this season.
 
Joining Chen atop the podium in the 400 meters were teammates Raquella Casserino and Lizzie Merrill. Casserino finished as runner-up in 57.08 seconds, a new PR, while Merrill crossed the finish in 57.85 seconds, with both hitting the regional standard.
 
Murphy also finished as a double-winner, capturing an individual title in the triple jump, while running a leg on the winning 4x400 meter relay. In the triple jump, the URochester first-year posted a distance of 11.84 meters.
 
The winning relay consisted of Murphy, Eva Ciuffetelli, Peyton Classer and Rita Sciortino who ran a time of 4:00.59.
 
Additionally, the Yellowjackets were second in the 4x100 meter relay to open things on the track on Saturday. That group featured Maya Hatch, Merrill, Casserino, and Chen, with the four posting a time of 49.35 seconds.
 
Graduate student Molly FitzGibbons finished off a strong conference meet with a runner-up finish in the 1500 meters after placing first on Friday in the steeplechase. On Saturday, FitzGibbons crossed the line in 4:43.12 to earn second place.
 
Ciuffetelli added a second place finish, with Sciortino finishing fifth in the 800 meters. Ciuffetelli crossed the line in 2:14.84, and Sciortino ended at 2:17.69, earning her podium placement.
 
URochester also had a pair of scorers in the 200 meters with Casserino and Merrill placing fourth and seventh, respectively. Casserino established a new personal-best with a 25.15 second sprint, while Merrill ended with a 25.62 second time.
 
Although the Yellowjackets did not have a top-8 finisher in the 5000 meters, the team did see four entrants hit the AARTFC qualifying mark. Alyssa Horng led the group in ninth with a time of 17:50.52, setting a new PR. Riley Joseph finished one spot behind in tenth, crossing the stripe in 17:51.10.
 
First-year Sam Mermelstein ended 12th in the 5K with a season-best of 17:56.92, and Ella Blau was 16th in 18:28.09.
 
A pair of 'Jacket jumpers ended just off the podium in the high jump, as Nora Dreslin and Lily Hubert ended in a tie for ninth. Both hit 1.47 meters as their best height, with that mark being a new PR for Hubert.
 
In the heptathlon, all three 'Jacket entries scored podium finishes. Sophomore Grace McInerney was fourth with a personal-best score of 3,780 points. Teammate Julia Largett was seventh (3,552 points), and first-year Cassie Ward was eighth, scoring 3,491 points.
 
Up next on the schedule is the Ithaca College Final Qualifier, set for next Saturday. That meet serves as the last chance for individuals to qualify for the upcoming All-Atlantic Region Championships set for May 13-14. After that, qualifying individuals will compete at the NCAA Division III Championships in LaCrosse, Wisconsin on May 21-23.
