As the Rochester women's swimming and diving team came away with 162-136 victory of Union College on the heels of diving dominance led by Megan Braun and double winners Stephanie Bolin and Cailee Caldwell, the men's meet came down to the final race, the 400 freestyle relay. In a representative cap to a competitive meet hosted by UR, the Rochester relay team was inched out by under two-tenths of a second, coming in second, but securing a 147-147 tie for the men.
The relay team included some of the 'Jackets biggest performers of the meet, including Sam Wilshire, Alex King, Christian Vu and Adam Bossert.
Senior Kevin Howard, however, was the big winner of the day. Not only did Howard cruise to victories in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke and win the 200-yard medley relay with Sam Wilshire, Adam Bossert and Alex King, but he also delivered perhaps the biggest victory of the meet in the penultimate race, beating Union swimmer Nick Boncek in the 200 IM by just 0.11 seconds to give the Yellowjacket men a nine-point lead going into the final race.
For the women, Bolin won both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly and Caldwell claimed victory in the 200-yard freestyle and took first in 500-yard freestyle to lead a sweep of the event. In the diving pool, Braun led a UR sweep of both the 1- and 3-meter dives. Sara Spielman, who came within in a point of fellow teammate Braun in the 1-meter, contributed with second-place finishes in both events.
Other winners for the women included Farrell Cooke in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:05.05 and Val Atwood in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.63, helping the Yellowjackets maintain a solid lead throughout the meet.
The men, meanwhile, were forced to come from behind, trailing halfway through the meet by a score of 63-68. The men earned a big boost from its divers anchored by Elliot Lasher, who won both the 1- and 3-meter dive by more than 20-point margins.
In addition to helping the 200-yard medley relay team to victory, Sam Wilshire was also a winner in two individual events – the 200-yard butterfly, which he took by over a two-second margin, and the third-to-last event, the 100-yard butterfly, which helped to fuel UR's comeback.
Bossert was the other winner for the men, taking first in a time of 22.45 in the 50-yard freestyle.
UR will be on the road until January, when it returns to the Speegle-Wilbraham Pool for a dual meet against SUNY Cortland.
