Women Win Liberty Swim Crown; Men Have Top Swimmer

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Rochester's women successfully defended their Librety League Swimming and Diving Championship by finishing first in a field of eight schools at the meet held in the Capitol District over the weekend.

The Yellowjackets totaled 865.5 points, finishing ahead of Union (811.5), and RPI (518). St. Lawrence was fourth (392), followed by Vassar (367.5), William Smith (289), Skidmore (206.5), and Clarkson (105).

Rochester's men finished a strong third with 736 points. RPI won the team title with 860 points. Union was second (812.5). St. Lawrence was fourth (427.5) followed by Clarkson (228), Vassar (193), and Skidmore (188).

Sam Wilshire of the men was named the Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet. In two sessions on Saturday, he won three individual events and swam on a winning relay. That gave him a total of four outright victories plus a relay win. (He won the 200 IM on Friday).

Rochester had five individual event wins on Saturday plus the 200 medley relay. Wilshire won the 100 butterfly (50.54), the 100 freestyle (47.84), and the 200 butterfly (1:55.92). Kevin Howard won the 400 IM (4:22.52) and Christian Vu was first to the wall in the 200 freestyle (59.69). The 200 medley (Howard, Adam Bossert, Wilshire, and Alex King) won in 1:37.78.

On the women's side, Val Atwood was a double winner, taking the 100 backstroke (59.69) and the 200 backstroke (2:09.37). Mairead Cyrus won the 100 butterfly (59.80).

The women's 200 medley relay of Atwood, Jessica Indyk, Corinne Lampe, and Dayna Jacob was victorious in 1:52.04.
