Roland O'Brien batted away the potential game-tying touchdown pass as time expired to secure a 24-17 football victory for Alfred University over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Rochester (3-4) trailed, 24-7, before a rally late in the third quarter that carried into the fourth quarter.
Dean Kennedy threw a six-yard TD pass to
Thomas Hayes with 1:36 left in the third, pulling Rochester within 24-14. The Yellowjackets capped a 17-play, 69-yard drive with a 22-yard field goal from
Alex Antonucci with 1:57 remaining to draw within 24-17.
Kobie Hamm recovered an onside kick by Rochester, giving the Yellowjackets possession at their own 48. Kennedy drove his team to a pair of first downs but the Yellowjackets were set back when he was flagged for intentional grounding under a heavy Alfred rush. That put the ball on the 46 with 33 seconds left. After an incompletion (under another strong rush), he found Hayes slanting from left to right. The pass moved the ball to the AU 11. Alfred was penalized for pass interference at the 2 on first down, giving Rochester first and goal with less than 15 seconds left.
Kennedy overthrew
Richard Brunet in the back of the end zone. O'Brien broke up a pass for Hayes on second down. On the final play, Kennedy's fade for the right corner of the end zone for Hayes was broken up by O'Brien as well.
Alfred (5-3) finished with seven pass breakups – four by O'Brien – and two interceptions – one by Ryan Quinlivan in the back of the end zone. That came one play after Hamm blocked an Eric Rockwood punt early in the fourth quarter, giving the Yellowjackets possession at the AU 26.
Nick Clark rushed for a pair of touchdowns for Alfred in the second quarter and Josh Phillips caught a 47-yard option pass from Christian Smith late in the first quarter. Alfred led, 21-0, before
Braezen Subick drove Rochester 58 yards in 11 plays, throwing a two-yard TD pass to
Joe Cicero with 1:11 left in the half.
Alfred rushed for 75 net yards, 42 by Austin Dwyer. T.L. Kilcarr completed 16 of 25 passes for 181 yards. He was sacked twice. Smith was 2 for 2 on option passes for 49 yards and the TD. Phillips caught five passes for 108 yards and Justin Oliver had five catches for 84 yards.
For Rochester, Kennedy completed 12 of 30 passes for 153 yards with one TD and one interception. He also rushed for 47 yards on six carries. Subick was 9 of 16 for 60 yards, one TD, and one interception.
Rochester totaled 306 yards in offense (213 passes, 93 rushing). Alfred totaled 205 (230 passing, 75 rushing).
Defensively, Mike Raplee had 9 solo tackles and one assist for Alfred. Wes Smith had six solos and three assists.
Zach Cicero had 14 tackles for Rochester, seven solo.
Tony Ortega had 11 stop[s.
