In a physical game that featured 47 fouls, Otterbein University topped SUNY Cobleskill 94-75 to claim 3rd place at the UR-Holiday Inn Airport Thanksgiving Invitational.
The Cardinals (2-2) were led by big men Zach Bakenhaster and Max Van Meter. Bakenhaster, the teams All-Tournament representative poured in 24 points, had 11 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. Van Meter also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards.
The Fighting Tigers (1-4) had three double figure scorers, led by Will Davis who had 14 points and five rebounds. Tyrone Mitchell had 11 points and Jack Jeffres had 10 points and six rebounds. Jeffres was Cobleskill's All-Tournament Team representative.
The game was evenly played for the first eight minutes, with neither team running off a big run and getting a lead bigger than three points. But at 11:38, a three by Otterbein's Matt McCollister ignited an 11-0 run in just over two minutes to extend the lead to 14 points.
Three minutes into the second half, the Cardinals used two Bakenhaster layups and a Tommy Waterwash 3-pointer to extend the lead from seven back to 14. The Fighting Tigers would not get closer than 12 the rest of the game at Otterbein went on for the win.
For the tournament, Bakenhaster had 32 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists. For Cobleskill, Jeffres had 13 points and 12 rebounds.
