Box Score

ROCHESTER, NY- Sophomore midfielder Kris Kassel scored the lone goal of the game in the 53rd minute off a long throw in as Marywood University defeated St. John Fisher 1-0 in the Rochester Flower City Soccer Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Marywood (1-1) nearly made it 1-0 early on in the first half with a shot by Daniel Lopez who made a nifty move putting the ball through the defenders legs 16 minutes in.  His shot went just high of the cross bar from 20 yards out.  That chance was the only real good scoring opportunity in the first half for either side.

The Pacers were then able to break through with a goal in the 53rd minute when Lopez was able throw in a long ball to Kris Kassel who tapped it in the goal from a tough angle on the right sideline.

Marywood's Christian Lawlor fired a shot from the left wing in the 59th minute that just skimmed high, nearly making the score 2-0.

St. John Fisher's Matt Silvi looked for the equalizer in the 64th minute but his shot from the top of the box sailed high and wide.  Soon after, Marywood's Scott Campbell was fouled on a near breakaway, and teammate Adam Johnson then fired the free kick that just missed.

With 18 minutes remaining, Fisher's Garhett Varin was able to break into the box on a long ball and drew the Marywood keeper Austin Wright out of his net.  After dribbling around the sprawling goalie, Varin was able to find teammate Jake Quattrini in front of the net, but the junior missed the open net to the right.

Quattrini and the Cardinals (1-1) were able to mount a charge late with a number of solid chances, but the Marywood goalie held Fisher off the board.

For the Pacers, Wright made five saves.  In the Fisher net, Joshua Klein stopped one shot.

Member of the All-Tournament Team will be decided following the Rochester-Fredonia St game at 3PM.
