The University of Rochester squash team moved to 1-1 on the 2021-22 season following a 9-0 loss at the hands of 2nd-ranked Harvard University on Sunday afternoon at the Lyman Squash Center.
Harvard, the defending CSA national champion from 2019-20, earns the victory in its season opener. The Crimson enter this season #2 in the preseason CSA poll, while Rochester sits at #10 in the rankings. Harvard's lineup also boasts four returning CSA All-Americans from the national title winning 2019-20 campaign.
In the match, the Crimson posted 3-0 wins in eight of the nine matches, with the lone four-game match being at #6 between
Emilio Carrillo and Ido Burstein. It was a tight first game going to Burstein 12-10, with the Harvard player going up 2-0 after an 11-6 win. Carrillo earned the set win in the third by an 11-8 score to stay alive, but Burstein rebounded with an 11-3 win to earn the point for Harvard.
Harvard recorded the first three points of the match at positions 5, 1 and 7. At five, Adam Corcoran topped
Omar Zakaria 11-7, 11-3 and 11-4. In the top spot on the ladder, UR's
Cesar Segundo battled Victor Crouin and improved every game, but ultimately lost in three games, 11-3, 11-6 and 11-9. Liam Rotzoll made it a 3-0 Crimson lead after blanking
Quinlan Jeudy 11-6, 11-5 and 11-8.
The second wave of matches saw Harvard clinch the win following wins at #8 and #3. Tate Harms topped
Alejandro Porras 11-4, 11-3 and 11-8 to make the score 4-0, with Samuel Scherl earning Harvard's match-clinching point at #3 against
Yash Fadte (11-6, 11-2, 11-4). The match at six concluded the second wave of matches as Harvard was up 6-0.
In the third set of matches, Harvard completed the sweep with wins from 2019-20 CSA individual champion Marwan Tarek at #2, Neel Joshi at #9 and George Crowne at #4. Tarek defeated
Abdelrahman Lasheen 11-5, 11-2 and 11-2, Joshi topped
Tom Whiteley 11-2, 11-8 and 12-10, and Crowne completed the shutout by winning 11-5, 11-5 and 11-1 over
Jake Koeppel.
UR gets a few weeks off and returns to action against #1 ranked Penn on December 4th, with the match starting at 12 pm.
