ITHACA, NY – After day one in the pool at the 10th annual Ithaca College Bomber Invite, the University of Rochester men's swimming and diving teams sits in third place among ten schools competing.
Rochester ranks third with 298 team points, trailing only SUNY Geneseo with 554 points and host Ithaca with 340 points. The Yellowjackets have a comfortable lead on fourth with Vassar checking in with 128.5 points and Shippensburg rounds out the top five teams with 111 points after day one.
Friday's competition featured five events for both men and women, the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 200 medley relay and men's 3-meter diving.
UR's best finish of the opening day was from
Jose Corredor Alvarez in the 500 free. The junior clocked in at 4:41.67 and ended as runner-up in a field 46 finishers. Teammate
Bryce Berkhof finished in fifth place in 4:47.21 and
Bruno Coelho cracked the top-10, touching in 4:50.25, good for tenth.
The Yellowjackets had four finishers in the top-16 in the 200 IM, led by first-year
Jeremy Mah who finished in eighth place. Mah's time was 1:57.63. Also, scoring top-16 finishes were
Frank Li,
Edward Domanico and
Matt Kiel who wound up in 14th, 15th and 16th, respectively.
Trevor Hoch was Rochester's top sprinter in the 50 free on Friday. The junior finished in 21.23 seconds, ranking sixth in the field of 88 swimmers.
Grant Yap was the second UR finisher in 26th place.
On the 3-meter board, sophomore
David Robinson and senior
Adam Hopson finished close together, in sixth and seventh place, respectively. Robinson's 11-dive total was 444.25 points, while Hopson accumulated a score of 432.85. Robinson's score was good enough to eclipse the NCAA Zone qualifying score of 440.
The final event of the night was the 200 medley relay, in which the team of Mah,
Alexander Cho, Domanico and Hoch finished in third place with a time of 1:34.25.
Day two of competition at the Bomber Invite takes place on Saturday, with multiple sessions taking place. The morning swimming session starts at 10 am, with afternoon diving starting at 1 pm. The evening swimming session is scheduled to being at 6 pm.
