ITHACA, NY – A third straight solid day for the University of Rochester men's swimming and diving team saw the Yellowjackets finish in third among ten schools at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Rochester finished the three-day event with 1,143 points ranking third behind meet winner SUNY Geneseo (1,863) and host Ithaca (1,436.5). UR's point total was nearly double the next closest team in the standings, as Shippensburg ended fourth with 650 points, while Vassar (603.5) rounded out the top five.
Junior
Jose Corredor Alvarez highlighted Rochester's third day of competition by earning UR's only win of the meet. Corredor Alvarez dominated the 1650 freestyle with his time of 16:13.22. The junior won by over 20 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher and earned a NCAA 'B' cut time in the process.
Corredor Alvarez's win was not the only strong result in the race though, as four other swimmers finished inside the top-12.
Bryce Berkhof was third (16:46.86) while
Bruno Coelho was fifth (16:51.72).
Sean Finnerty and
Nate Pollitt finished in 10th and 11th, respectively.
The Yellowjacekts also had five finishers in the top-16 in the 200 backstroke.
Jeremy Mah led the contingent, placing seventh of 48 in the event with a time of 47.07 seconds. Johnny Wu was 11th in 1:59.00 and Finnerty finished 13th in 2:00.20.
Edward Domanico was right behind in 14th while
Chris Bushnell touched in 16th place.
Rochester's
Trevor Hoch finished fifth of 78 swimmers in the 100 freestyle with a strong race, finishing in 47.07 seconds.
Grant Yap posted a time of 47.65 and was 13th in the same event.
In the final individual event of the competition,
Matt Kiel placed eighth in the 200 breaststroke, clocking in at 2:12.82.
Alexander Cho was 11th in 2:15.03 and Corredor Alvarez finished off his strong day in 15th (2:16.42).
To close the meet, UR's 400 freestyle relay team of Berkhof,
Frank Li, Yap and Hoch placed third in 3:09.88.
Rochester is now off for the holiday season and will return to official competition on January 15th in a home meet against RIT. The Yellowjackets will also spend some time over the break on a training trip down in Floriday.
