PHILADELPHIA – Rochester's squash team ended as the number 10 team in the College Squash Association for the 2021-22 season, following a 7-2 loss in the Hoehn Cup championship match on Sunday afternoon against Cornell University.
The Yellowjackets conclude the season with an even 8-8 record, with all eight losses coming against the top nine teams in the nation. Cornell picks up its second win of the year over Rochester, following a 5-4 win in early February, and ends its season at 9-7 overall.
Rochester earned wins from first-year
Yash Fadte and junior
Abdelrahman Lasheen on Sunday. Both were 3-0 winners, with Fadte winning at position number two and Lasheen posting his victory at the three spot.
The match opened with Cornell sweeping the first wave at positions one, four and nine. All-American Veer Chotrani took the top spot against
Cesar Segundo 11-8, 11-8 and 11-8. At four,
Luis Moncada dropped a 3-0 decision to Charles Culhane 11-7, 11-6 and 11-5. Rohan Iyer completed the early 3-0 lead with an 11-4, 11-6 and 11-5 win over
Quinlan Jeudy at the bottom of the ladder.
Lasheen put Rochester on the scoreboard with a strong win against Arnaav Sareen to open the second wave. UR's co-captain finished the weekend 3-0 after an 11-3, 11-6 and 11-7 win.
Cornell ended up clinching the match though through the second wave, winning at #5 and #7 to go up 5-1. At five, Nikhil Iyer bested
Omar Zakaria in three games and Nicholas Robinson earned a four game win (7-11, 13-11, 11-6, 11-7) over
Emilio Carrillo to clinch for the Big Red.
In the final wave, Cornell got a win at #6 by retirement before Fadte swept past Spencer Yager 15-13, 11-6 and 11-5. The UR first-year improved to 10-4 overall on the season, ranking second on Rochester in wins.
Cornell closed out the match with Humza Khan defeating
Alejandro Porras in the lone five-game match of the day. The pair traded sets over the first four games (11-5, 7-11, 11-6, 7-11), with Khan picking up the win 11-7 in the fifth.
Multiple individuals on Rochester's squad will next take to the court in two weeks at the College Squash Association Individual Championships to conclude the 2021-22 squash season. The tournament runs from March 4-6 in Philadelphia.
