'Jackets Claim Liberty League Squash Title

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY – The University of Rochester squash team claimed its third straight and ninth overall Liberty League conference titles on Sunday following two 9-0 victories against Bard and Hobart.
 
Rochester (5-5) evens its season record on the year and impressed on the court, winning a total of 35 of 36 team points during the two-day championship. Saturday's results included 9-0 and 8-1 wins over Vassar and St. Lawrence.
 
The opening match on Sunday was a sweep over Bard College. Cesar Segundo, Tom Whiteley, Varun Kumar and Nic Gill were the winners as the Raptors only posted a lineup with four players.
 
The Yellowjackets clinched the league title with another sweep, winning 9-0 over Hobart in the second match of the day. Eight of the nine wins were by 3-0 scores and it goes as the second sweep of the Statesmen this season for Rochester. The Yellowjackets opened the 2021-22 season with another 9-0 win over Hobart.
 
Cesar Segundo
Segundo won twice on Sunday.

Segundo, Abdelrahman Lasheen and Luis Moncada each earned 3-0 sweeps at the top of UR's lineup. Moncada yielded only six points in three games, winning 11-2, 11-2 and 11-2.
 
The middle third of the lineup featured Omar Zakaria, Emilio Carrillo and Alejandro Porras as positions four, five and six, respectively. Carrillo and Porras were both 3-0 winners.
 
Zakaria was the lone UR player in the top nine forced beyond three games, as his opponent Joey Lantos battled him to five games. The two alternated wins in the first four games, with Zakaria emerging in the fifth for the win. The line score was 11-6, 8-11, 11-8, 8-11 and 11-5 in favor of the UR first-year player.
 
Rochester's bottom third of the ladder was Quinlan Jeudy at #7, Whiteley at #8 and Kumar at #9. Jeudy won 11-7, 11-9 and 11-8, while Whiteley posted an 11-8, 11-5 and 11-4 victory. At nine, Kumar won 11-7, 11-8 and 11-9.
 
Gill was a 3-1 winner in the #10 exhibition slot for Rochester, going 2-0 in his matches on the day.
 
As the regular season winds down, the Yellowjackets have three matches before nationals later in the month. The final home match of the season is set for Tuesday afternoon against Dartmouth. Next weekend, UR hits the road for matches at Columbia and Yale.
