A pair of student-athletes from the men's swimming and diving team have been recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as 1st Team Academic All-District At-Large for the 2021-22 academic year.
Â
Senior diver
Adam Hopson and junior swimmer
Jose Corredor Alvarez were selected Division III 1st Team for District 3, which includes all of New York State. The At-Large team consists of individuals from sports that do not have their own CoSIDA Academic All-District and Academic All-America teams, including swimming and diving, lacrosse, tennis, golf, fencing, skiing, ice hockey, wrestling and more.
Â
In order to be considered for Academic All-District and Academic All-America honors, student-athletes must be a starter or key reserve on their team, be at least a sophomore or higher in academic standing at their current institution and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher.
Â
Corredor Alvarez has been the Yellowjackets top distance freestyle swimmer since he joined the team as a first-year three seasons ago. He was named a 1st Team All-American in 2021, ranking with the seventh quickest time in Division III in the 1650 distance. He earned an NCAA 'B' cut this past season in the 1650 free, matching the feat he attained as a first-year. The junior holds three school records, coming in the 500 free, 1000 free and 1650 free.
Â
Out of the pool, Corredor Alvarez was named UAA All-Academic and CSCAA Scholar All-American twice. He is a student alumni ambassador and holds three scholarships. After graduation from Rochester next year, he plans to pursue his Masters/PhD in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering. During spare time, he has volunteered in teaching swimming to babies, children and special needs individuals in his native Venezuela. Corredor Alvarez is majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Rochester and currently holds a 3.86 cumulative grade point average.
Â
Hopson recently completed his terrific career at Rochester, being a key contributor to the Yellowjackets all four years. He was named CSCAA Honorable Mention All-American on the 1-meter board following his junior season in 2021. At the UAA Championships, he finished in the top-12 on both boards in all three seasons the championships were held during his career. He also earned NCAA Zone qualifying marks the last three seasons and ranks inside the top-5 scorers in UR history on both boards for an 11-dive list.
Â
Academically, Hopson has a 3.90 cumulative GPA, double-majoring in Biological Sciences and Environmental Sciences. He was a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American, a three-time UAA All-Academic selection and was 1st Team Academic All-District by CoSIDA last year. He earned Provost Circle Scholar honors in 2021 and was named a UR Garnish Scholar last fall. He was a teachers assistant in chemistry and completed a summer research internship in Environmental Justice. Additionally, he worked as an Emergency Department Research Associate at the UR Medical Center.
Â
Both these individuals, along with the rest of 1st Team All-District honorees, will now be considered for one of three teams selected for Academic All-America At-Large honors in Division III, with those teams being released in June.
