Rowing Completes Spring Season at NIRC Championships

WORCESTER, MA – The University of Rochester rowing team closed out a solid 2021-22 campaign on Sunday, competing at the National Invitational Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond.
 
The Yellowjackets sent three entries to Massachusetts, competing in the Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8 and Novice 8 competitions throughout the day. Rochester's Varsity 8 finished in 13th among 20 teams, the 2V was ninth of 14 schools and the Novice boat ended in fifth of seven.
 
In the 1st Varsity eight heats, 13th-ranked Rochester's entry was matched up in a tough race with top ranked Wellesley, #5 Williams, #6 Ithaca and #11 Clark. In addition, Liberty League rivals RIT and St. Lawrence rounded out the heat.
 
During the race, the Yellowjackets ended fifth of seven, posting a time of 7:06.043. Wellesley earned the heat win and Ithaca was second, advancing to the grand final. Williams and Clark were the next two finishers, ending just about ten seconds ahead of fifth place Rochester, booking a spot to the petite final. St. Lawrence and RIT rounded out the heat in sixth and seventh.
 
Rochester, competing in the third final of the Varsity 8 category, earned the win in that competition, nearly matching its heat time, completing the race in 7:06.371. That time was over eight seconds clear of #9 Smith's entry and third place William Smith College. Skidmore, Mount Holyoke and St. Lawrence rounded out the field in the third final race.
 
In the 2V race, Rochester's boat ended third with a time of 7:29.678 in the heats. Rochester finished behind Wellelsey and Tufts, but beat out Clark in four-boat race.
 
In the petite final, Rochester finished third of six teams with a time of 7:25.630. Ithaca was first, followed by Smith. The Yellowjackets edged out Clark for third, with Colby and Coast Guard rounding out the action.
 
There was only one final in the novice category, with the Yellowjackets placing fifth after rowing a time of 7:43.169. The University of New Hampshire earned the win in 7:24.986, followed by Smith, Bates and Williams, all teams ranked inside the Division III top-10. Rochester's entry topped League rivals Ithaca and RIT in the racing.
