University of Rochester Men's Basketball Assistant Coach
Aaron Toomey will be serve as Head Coach and co-GM of The Nerd Team (TNT) in the 2022 edition of The Basketball Tournament (TBT) this coming July.

Toomey just completed his first season as an assistant with the Rochester program in 2021-22, helping guide the Yellowjackets to an 18-9 record overall and spot in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

TBT is a 64-team, single-elimination basketball tournament entering its ninth year, with the final team taking home a winner-take-all prize of one million dollars. The tournament models itself after the NCAA tournament with different regional locations hosting rounds throughout the month of July, with the semifinals and finals taking place in Dayton, Ohio over weekend in late July and early August.

Toomey will be joined on TNT's staff by Matthew Goldsmith, current head coach at The College of New Jersey. The pair will guide The Nerd Team roster which is currently comprised of players from elite academic institutions including as Yale, Harvard, Notre Dame, Brown, Mississippi, Alabama, Fairfield and TCNJ. Toomey and Goldsmith are both alums of Amherst College.

The Nerd Team will play in the Syracuse Regional from July 22-25, with the team drawing a #4 seed in the 8-team regional bracket, headlined by defending TBT tournament champs Boeheim's Army (Syracuse Alumni) as the top seed.

The first round opponent for TNT will be Brown & White, a team representing St. Bonaventure University alums, with the game set for 5 pm on July 22nd at SRC Arena.

2022 will be The Nerd Team's second ever appearance in TBT, as the group was narrowly defeated in its only appearance last year, falling 88-82 to Blue Collar U (University at Buffalo) in the opening round. The 2021 squad of TNT featured former University of Rochester All-American John DiBartolomeo, with Toomey also being featured on the coaching staff.

Toomey says of his teams second appearance in the winner-take-all tournament, "We're looking forward to competing and showing that academics and hoops aren't an either/or thing, and that you can do both at the highest level. We have a bunch of guys on our roster that are proving that day in and day out right now, playing professionally while also having great degrees from some of the best universities in the country."
