Yellowjackets Shoot Sub-300 Round at Golfweek Classic

DESTIN, FL – Led by four of five golfers shooting rounds of 75 or better, the University of Rochester golf team sits in the middle of a loaded field at the Division III Golfweek October Classic after round one on Sunday.
 
Rochester's team score in the opening round at the Sandestin Resorts Raven Golf Club was 295, including scores of 72, 74, 74 and 75. That tally puts the Yellowjackets 13th of 25 of the best teams in Division III.
 
Top-ranked Emory University shot an 8-under score of 276 as a team to hold the 18-hole lead. Four other highly ranked schools, #6 Illinois Wesleyan (279), #2 Methodist (279), #12 St. John's (282) and #5 Carnegie Mellon (282) make up the rest of the top-5 teams on the leaderboard.
 
Overall, 17 of the top-25 teams in the latest Division III coaches poll are competing at this event which is annually one of the premier Division III tournaments. That total includes eight of the top-10 teams. The rest of the field also has seven teams that are among others receiving votes in the October 6 poll.
 
Rochester's leading golfer on the opening day was senior Tom Liu who carded a 1-over par score of 72. His round featured three birdies, including two on the par-3 holes, two bogeys and one double-bogey. He sits in a tie for 36th place among the 125-player field.
 
Both graduate student Brendan Frain and sophomore Josh Pethel shot 74 (3-over) on Sunday, ranking in a tie for 51st after the opening 18 holes of the 54-hole event. Frain carded a team-high four birdies in his round, while Pethel was terrific on holes one through nine (his back nine), ending at 33, a 2-under par inward nine.
 
UR's fourth scorer on the day was senior Kerry Wang who shot a 4-over par score of 75. Wang led the team with 14 pars, and added four bogeys on his card to reach his final score. Wang is in a tie for 65th place.
 
The fifth Rochester golfer was first-year Arjun Aujla who opened his tournament with an 84.
 
On day two of the event, Rochester tees off at 8:30 am on hole ten, being matched up with Huntington College and Southwestern University, a pair of teams that sit just two strokes behind the Yellowjackets.
