JEKYLL ISLAND, GA – The University of Rochester golf team improved its team score on day two of the Jekyll Island Invitational and stayed put on the leaderboard in a tie for 22nd place overall, competing in one of the toughest Division III golf fields all season.
Sophomore All-American
Alvin Su played like one on Saturday, firing a 5-under par round of 67 on the par-72, 6,730-yard layout at the Pine Lakes Course at the Jekyll Island Golf Club.
Su's career-low round featured six birdies and one bogey, with the 67 score matching the fourth-best individual 18-hole round in URochester program history. Only three golfers, Nick Palladino, Greg Perry, and Chris Sladish bettered Su's round, with each carding 66's. The stellar round moved Su up to sixth-place in the 150-golfer field after Saturday's round.
Both sophomore
Galen Fowles and first-year
Anderson Palm notched the same score for the second straight day on Saturday, with both ending at 2-over par, 74. After shooting rounds of 75 on Friday, the duo is tied for 89th overall individually after two days.
On Saturday, Fowles had three birdies on his front nine holes (holes 10-18, UR played the back nine first), while Palm's three birdies were on his inward nine (holes 1-9). Fowles added five bogeys on his scorecard, while Palm had three bogeys and a double-bogey.
The 'Jackets fourth scorer on day two was first-year
Henry Zhong who fired a 5-over par round of 77. Zhong opened by being 6-over for his opening nine holes on Saturday, before closing the round strong with a 1-under inward nine holes. He sits in 136th place overall in the field at 155 strokes through two rounds.
Arjun Aujla was the final Yellowjacket golfer competing, with the junior finishing at 6-over, 78 on day two. Aujla did have five birdies in his round, including three on his back nine, overall contributing to a score of 34 on holes one through nine.
URochester as a team sits in a tie for 22nd place among 30 teams in the field with 589 strokes through two rounds. The Yellowjackets are one of several ranked teams in the tournament, including top-ranked Huntingdon who is shooting lights out through two rounds. The Hawks lead the field with a 28-under par total of 548 after Saturday's second round.
Round three tees off on Sunday, with that round closing out the 54-hole tournament.
Elsewhere at the Jekyll Island Resort, senior
Josh Pethel is representing URochester in the Indian Mound Individual Invitational and has posted two solid rounds to rank fourth in a field of 25 golfers. Pethel's round one total was a 2-over par round of 74 on the Indian Mound Golf Course, featuring three birdies.
On day two, Pethel matched the birdie total, signing for a scorecard with a 73 total (1-over), to sit with a two-day score of 147. The UR senior is one shot out of second place and is six strokes behind the individual leader. Pethel has one more round in his weekend as well, with the final round set to tee off on Sunday morning.
