URochester Cards Third Straight Sub-300 Round at Jekyll Island

JEKYLL ISLAND, GA – For the third straight day, the University of Rochester golf team fired a solid sub-300 team round, ending in 22nd place at the Jekyll Island Invitational at the Pine Lakes Course at the Jekyll Island Resort.
 
The Yellowjackets finished each of the three days in 22nd place and ended the event with a team score of 884, shooting rounds of 297, 292 and 295. Overall, 30 teams competed, with the Jekyll Island Invite annually being one of the toughest fields in Division III golf.
 
Sophomore Alvin Su completed an outstanding week, ending in sixth place overall among the 150-golfer field, finishing at 10-under par for the tournament, with a 54-hole cumulative score of 206. Su ended under par in each of the three rounds, firing a 2-under round of 70 on Sunday at the par-72, 6,730-yard Pine Lakes course.
 
Su's final round featured four birdies and two bogeys, and overall in the tournament, the All-American was second in the field in par-4 hole scoring (6-under) and ranked tied for fourth with 16 total birdies across the three rounds.
 
Fellow sophomore Galen Fowles improved his score for the second straight round, shaving one stroke off his 18-hole total in each of the three days. Fowles opened with a 75 on Friday, shot a 74 on Saturday and closed the tournament with a 73 (1-over) round in Sunday's action. Fowles was extremely consistent throughout the tournament, recording 38 pars among the 54 holes, finishing second in the event in that category. He ended in a tie for 83rd overall with a 3-day total of 222.
 
First-year Anderson Palm was URochester's next scorer on Sunday, signing for a score of 76 in the final round. Palm finished each of the three rounds with scores of 76 or better and wrapped up the tournament in a tie for 101st place.
 
Junior Arjun Aujla also shot a 76 (4-over) on Sunday, closing out the tournament with his best round of the three days. Aujla highlighted his final round with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole. He placed in a tie for 134th.
 
Rookie Henry Zhong was the final golfer representing URochester at the team event in Georgia. Zhong ended with a final round of 84 on Sunday, competing as a member of the Yellowjackets starting lineup for the first time in his collegiate career. Zhong finished in a tie for 143rd place.
 
Senior Josh Pethel also turned in a strong performance competing as an individual at the Jekyll Island Indian Mound Individual Invite. Pethel wrapped up his tournament in solo second place, shooting a final round score of 70 (2-under) to place runner-up among 25 golfers in the individual tournament.
 
Pethel's 3-day total was 217 (1-over), with his third round score being the best of the week. On Sunday, the UR senior played steady all day, notching three birdies and just one bogey, along with 14 pars on his scorecard.
 
URochester's next scheduled event is its lone home tournament of the season, the annual Fred Kravetz Invitational, taking place on April 17-18 at Locust Hill C.C. and Oak Hill C.C.
