DESTIN, FL – The University of Rochester golf team carded its second straight team score round of 295 to move up one spot on a tightly congested leaderboard on day two of the Division III Golfweek October Classic on Monday at the Sandestin Resort.
Through 36 holes of competition, Rochester's score of 590 has the Yellowjackets in 12th place among 25 of the best teams in Division III. The event, scheduled for 54 holes, concludes with a final round to be played on Tuesday morning.
#2 ranked Methodist University took the second round lead, sitting at 566 through 36 holes. #6 Illinois Wesleyan is three shots back in second place, while #1 ranked Emory, the first round leader, dropped back to third following Monday's round. Overall, eight of the top-10 teams in Division III and 17 of the top-25 are competing this week.
UR's round of 295 was tied for the eighth best in the field on Monday, moving Rochester up one spot on the team leaderboard.
Senior
Kerry Wang paced Rochester during round two, shooting a 1-under par round of 70 on the par-71, 6,621-yard layout at the Raven Golf Club. Wang vaulted up 44 spots on the individual leaderboard, ranking in a tie for 21st after two rounds at 145. His second round scorecard was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 11th hole. After shooting one-under on his first nine holes, Wang was steady on the back nine (holes 1-9) with seven pars, one bogey and a birdie on his final hole of the day to finish in red figures.
Sophomore
Josh Pethel and senior
Tom Liu each recorded a second straight round of 75 or better on Monday and rank tied for 37th in the field at 147 through 36 holes. Pethel shot a 73 on Monday, while Liu carded a 75. Pethel had four birdies in his 2-over par round, while Liu was solid in his round, notching 14 pars over his 18 holes.
Graduate student
Brendan Frain battled to a 77 (6-over) in his second round, but had a strong stretch from the 11th through 15th holes, shooting three birdies over that five-hole run. He sits in a tie for 66th place among the 125-player field with 151 strokes through two rounds.
Rounding out the Yellowjacket lineup was first-year
Arjun Aujla who shot an 85 on Monday. Aujla's scorecard featured a solid 39 on his back nine.
In the third and final round, UR tees off on hole one starting at 8:40 am with St. John's (MN), Lynchburg and Texas-Dallas, all teams sitting in the top-10 through two rounds.
