UR Finishes T-17th in Competitive, Golfweek Classic Field

DESTIN, FL – University of Rochester men's golf posted its third-straight team score of 295 to wrap up the final day of the Division III Golfweek October Classic on Monday at the Sandestin Resort.
 
The 'Jackets' 295 team score, 11-over par, wrapped up a 54-hole score of 885, good for a tie with Huntington College for 17th place in a field stacked with ranked competition.
 
No. 2 Methodist, who moved into first place on the second day of competition, won the classic, finishing seven-under-par on Tuesday (277) for an overall score of 843, nine strokes under, and 17 strokes ahead of second-place Illinois Wesleyan.
 
No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan (860, +8) and No. 16 Lynchburg (861, +9) rounded out the top three squads, while every one of the Top-10 finishers was ranked in the most recent Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll.
 
Kerry Wang once again led the 'Jackets on the final day of competition, shooting two-under par on the par-71 course. Wang's 69 score moved the senior into a tie for ninth place with a 214 overall score, one-over par for the entire tournament. Wang moved up 12 spots on the 125-player leaderboard on the final day of the competition, connecting on six birdies, including four on the back nine.
 
Josh Pethel recorded UR's second-best score of the day, shooting 74, three-over-par, to finish tied for 44th overall. Pethel birdied the 14th hole, before finishing his day with a trio of bogeys on the back nine.
 
Brendan Frain shot UR's next-best round of the day, with a 75 score, four over par. The graduate student finished tied for 75th overall, hitting a pair of birdies on Tuesday. Tom Liu shot a six over par on the final day of the competition, finishing in a tie for 62nd after scoring two birdies, one each on the front and back nine.
 
Arjun Aujla rounded out the Yellowjackets' five-some, shooting 79 on the final day to finish tied for 122nd, shooting four strokes better on the back nine.
 
The Yellowjackets next wrap up their time in Florida with the University Athletic Association Match Play Championship on Wednesday, Oct. 18 beginning at 7:00 a.m. No. 4 Rochester will face No. 1 Carnegie Mellon in the semifinals, before either advancing to the championship or consolation round later that day at the Sandestin Resort.
