LIGONIER, PA – A stacked field with 14 of the 15 teams nationally ranked or receiving votes greeted the University of Rochester golf team at the Carnegie Mellon University Tartan Invitational on Monday at Laurel Valley Golf Club.
The Yellowjackets, one of two teams among others receiving votes in the competition are in 14th place after day one of play which featured 36 holes of golf. UR scored a 315 in round one and a 317 in round two, battling the tough field and cold October weather.
2nd-ranked Methodist University is the 36-hole team leader, shooting 589 on day one. #1 Emory is second at 596, while #16 Lynchburg, #5 Carnegie Mellon and #7 Wittenberg round out the top five. Among the teams playing in the event are seven of the top-10 in the latest Division III coaches poll.

Kerry Wang and
Tom Liu who both needed 156 strokes to traverse 36 holes. Wang shot rounds of 79 and 77, while Liu had those same scores, but reversed, shooting 77 in round one and a 79 in the afternoon wave. Both players are tied for 34th on the leaderboard.
Graduate student
Brendan Frain was tied for 47th after shooting round of 77 and 81 to open his tournament with a 158 score on Monday.
Both of Rochester's remaining golfers, senior
Jonathan Zou and junior
Gary Pan carded the same rounds of 82 and 81 to rank tied for 69th in the field.
Frain was the Yellowjackets leader with six birdies on the day, while Wang carded 19 pars, leading the five Yellowjacket golfers during Monday's action.
