PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Fresh off their 2-1, NCAA Second-Round win over No. 24 Misericordia, No. 6 University of Rochester women's soccer will host a sectional pod featuring No. 16 New York University, No. 22 Bowdoin College and Tufts University, Nov. 18-19 at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
The Yellowjackets will square off with No. 16 NYU in the first game of the sectional on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m., with Bowdoin and Tufts facing off in the other matchup at 3:30 p.m. The two winners will then meet on Sunday at 3 p.m., with a spot in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament "Final Four" on the line.
Rochester, still undefeated at 14-0-5 (3-0-4 UAA) on the year, advanced to the sectional round with wins over Penn St. Behrend and No. 24 Misericordia in their first and second-round matchups. The 'Jackets won both contests by the final score of 2-1, scoring just over five minutes into the contest against the Lions, and a little over a minute in against the Cougars.
The sixth-ranked 'Jackets wrapped up their first undefeated regular season in program history with a 2-1 win over Emory on Saturday, Nov. 4, capping off a regular season that saw multiple wins over ranked foes and five Yellowjackets earn All-UAA honors, including both the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year in
Claire Grover and
Megan Pung.
Grover scored three goals in the 'Jackets first and second-round contests, tied for the most goals scored in the NCAA Tournament so far, and with her 18th goal of the year in the second minute vs. Misericordia, tied the UR single-season record.
All-time, Rochester is 13-12-2 vs. NYU, having battled the Violets to a scoreless draw earlier this year at Fauver Stadium on Oct. 20. The 'Jackets have not faced either Bowdoin or Tufts, but like Rochester and NYU, the Jumbos and Polar Bears matched up earlier this year in conference play, with Bowdoin coming away with a 3-2 victory in Brunswick, MI.
No. 22 Bowdoin earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament after falling to No. 4 Amherst in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship, 2-1. The Polar Bears come into the sectional at 11-4-5 (5-2-3 NESCAC) on the year, having beaten Swarthmore, 1-0, in their first-round matchup in Geneva, NY, before upsetting No. 7 and host William Smith, 1-0, in overtime to advance out of their regional pod and reach the "Sweet 16" for the first time in program history.
Offensively, the Polar Bears are led by First-Team All-NESCAC selection Greta Farkas, who led Bowdoin with six goals and an assist for a total of 13 points. Five other Polar Bears have scored 2+ goals, while Morgan Smiley, a Second-Team All-NESCAC selection, leads Bowdoin with 38 shots (24 on goal).
In goal for Bowdoin, Charlottle Iannone started every game for the Polar Bears, allowing 13 goals on 132 shots faced and making 82 saves. As a team, the Polar Bears allowed just 0.70 goals per game while scoring 1.20, tallying 24 goals on the season. Bowdoin also notched 248 shots (116 on goal) and tallied 76 corner kicks.
After finishing fourth in the UAA with a 12-2-2 (3-2-2 UAA) record, No. 16 NYU also earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, hosting a regional pod with No. 3 Carnegie Mellon, Southern Virginia and Washington & Lee. The Violets beat Southern Virginia in their first-round contest, 3-0, before upsetting the Tartans, 2-0, in the regional final to advance to the sectional round.
NYU sits at 14-2-2 (3-2-2 UAA) on the year heading into their matchup with the 'Jackets, led by one of the most potent offenses in the country. The Violets headed into the NCAA Tournament ranked in the top 10 of DIII in both goals and points, led by a trio of 10+ goal scorers.
Kelli Keady and Gabriella Funk both earned First-Team All-UAA honors after leading the Violets with 14 and 12 goals apiece, while Makenzie Rodrigues added 11 scores. Keady also leads NYU with 55 shots (37 on goal), while Funk tallied a team-high 11 assists. As a team, the Violets have scored 70 goals on the year, averaging almost four goals per game (3.89), while holding their opponents to just nine total goals.
Riley Felsher and Tyler Hawkins split time in goal for NYU, combining for 11 shutouts and 39 saves. Felsher appeared in 10 games, making eight starts and 11 saves, while Hawkins started 10 contests and made 28 saves.
The Jumbos head to Rochester after upsetting No. 15 The College of New Jersey in their second-round matchup, 3-0. The Jumbos, 9-5-4 (3-4-3 NESCAC), also earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, falling to then-No. 6-ranked Amherst in the NESCAC Tournament. Tufts was sent to Ewing, NJ and the TCNJ regional, where they defeated Franklin and Marshall College, 2-1, in their first-round matchup before upsetting the Lions to advance to sectionals.
Offensively, First-Team All-NESCAC selection Elsi Aires leads the Jumbos with 11 goals and four assists on a team-high 77 shots (37 shots on goal). Two other Jumbos have tallied 5+ goals (Thalia Greenberg and Nicola Sommers), while Caroline Kelly joins Aires with four assists. Defensively, three different keepers have seen action in goal, with Gigi Edwards starting 15 contests, including both of Tufts' NCAA Tournament matches. Edwards has allowed 14 goals on 111 shots faced this season, leading the Jumbos with 56 saves and a 7-3-4 record in net.
As a team, the Jumbos netted 37 goals on 23 assists, averaging 2.06 goals per game, while allowing 24 scores, 1.33 per game. Tufts has taken 93 corners, and ranks in the top 75 of the country in both shots and shots per game, with 341 shots and 164 shots on goal this season.
The 'Jackets and Violets will kick off the Rochester Sectional on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 1:00 p.m. at Edwin Fauver Stadium, with the Polar Bears and Jumbos to follow at 3:30 p.m. The two winners will face off the next day at 3:00 p.m., with a spot in the "Final Four" on the line.
