University of Rochester sophomore
Josephine Libby was selected to compete in the singles competition of the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships.
Â
Libby earns her second-straight selection after being selected as a first-year in 2022, UR's first singles selection since Frances Tseng in 2012. The Rochester, NY native advanced all the way to the NCAA quarterfinals, the deepest run in program history since 2001, en route to All-American honors.
Â
This season, Libby was the Yellowjackets' top singles player, going 21-4, playing every single match at the No. 1 spot in Rochester's 16 dual matches. Libby, ranked 25th in the nation and 15th in the northeast region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), went 13-3 in the one-spot for UR and 8-1 in tournaments, winning her last five matches of the year, and went 2-2 against regionally-ranked opponents.
Â
The sophomore was also a member of UR's top two doubles teams, pairing with
Sanjana Karnam to go 5-8, and
Rola Abouzeina to go 4-4.
Â
Libby is just the fifth singles player in women's tennis program history to compete at nationals, and the second-ever to compete in the NCAA Championship twice. Jill Mazza played in the singles bracket twice in 1998 and 1999, while Joanna Toke appeared in 2001, Lia Weiner in 2011 and Tseng in 2012. Rochester also sent a doubles team: Kristy Brown and Mazza, in 1998.
Â
The NCAA Division III individual championship consists of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.
Â
The NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Individual Championship will take place May 19-22 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, FL and will be hosted by the United States Tennis Association, Oglethorpe University and the Greater Orlando Sports Commission.
Â
The draw for the individual championship will be done by the women's tennis committee and will be released on Thursday, May 18 after 1:00 p.m. EST.
